Okay- it took me FOREVER, but I finally finished Midwives and I'm ready to talk about it!

October Book Club: Midwives

Alright, I'm still reading the October book!

One of my favourite things about our book club is it is making me move outside my "comfort zone" of reading (aka- no more chick-lit and Mary Higgins Clark or Nora Roberts!!) and read books that I wouldn't normally pick up off the shelf. And, I'm loving them!! I have found several new favourite books. The problem is, they are taking me longer to read than the "fluff" books like chick-lit! So, I'm still working on Midwives, but please feel free to start discussing. I'll be joining you all soon!!

Where Do You Find Book Recommendations?

The books I've read for our book club have quickly become some of my favourites!! Where do you girls find the books you recommend? I've never even heard of most of the books on our list, but I'm thoroughly enjoying all of them! Thanks for all the suggestions.

October Book Club

Well, we discussed the September and August books last month, so we won't have a discussion this month unless someone has read something they feel like chatting about! But I just wanted to remind everyone that October's book is Midwives by Chris Bohjalian. Make sure you've reserved your copy so we will be ready to discuss in a few weeks!

P.S. I Love You- August Book Club

Alright... I've been meaning to post this for the past 14 days! Who was able to read P.S. I Love You for our August discussion? I know we've discussed a couple other books already this month, and I have to tell you, I am loving it! I love to read and I'm really enjoying the discussions we have about books as well as all the great book recommendations I get from you girls.

So what did you all think of P.S. I Love You? I've mentioned before that it is one of my favourite books. And Cecelia Ahern is one of my favourite authors. I'm excited to hear what everyone else thought of the book.

Ready to Discuss: Jodi Picoult "Change of Heart"

Any of you who have read a Jodi Picoult book know that she loves to add some twists and turns. I'd hate to ruin the book for anyone who hasn't read it, so I'm going to leave my thoughts in the comments. Just want you to be aware that there will be spoilers in the comments, so read at your own risk!

New Jodi Picoult

Are any of you girls reading the new Jodi Picoult novel? Change of Heart? I would LOVE to have someone to discuss it with as I'm reading... any takers?

These is My Words Revisited...Again!

I probably shouldn't re-repost a discussion on this book but I have to give props to Tiffany for recommending this book!!  I actually checked it out twice but kept getting side-tracked on my reading.  This time, I read it in 3 days, it was so wonderful!!! I have to echo everything Claire said. It was wonderful and if you were a slacker like me, you should still read it! 

I reminded me of the Diary of Mattie Spenser by Sandra Dallas (who also wrote the Persian Pickle Club) and reminded me as well how much I love historical fiction!!

I was satisfied and enjoyed it and obviously devoured it :) but I was also a little disappointed with a few things.  I'll expound more in comments later.

These is My Words Discussion

Happy July everyone! I FINALLY got my copy of These is My Words and finished it last night (I couldn't put it down). I loved this book and hope that you all did too. I'm going to post some discussion questions in the comments...and everyone feel free to just say how you felt about the book too. You don't really have to answer the questions. (I know I'm posting this early, but I'm going out of town soon so I wanted to get it out there before I leave. :) )

I know a bunch of us have read different Jodi Picoult books (19 minutes, Plain Truth, My Sister's Keeper) and I'm wondering what you girls think of reading books like that for book club? I know some of them have a little bit of foul language so I didn't know what your thoughts are on reading those type of books. To be completely honest, I'm a speed reader, I skim books so more often than not, I don't realize there is swearing unless someone else points it out to me... I know that not everyone is that way and I don't want to choose or suggest books that will offend anyone, so let me know what your thoughts are! And of course, keep suggesting books.

I think for now we will all read "These Is My Words" in June, to discuss in July, so we have a little bit of time, but the faster we can come up with a list the better, so we can all get on the waiting list for the books!

Book Club

Alrighty Book Club members... we've been running into a problem recently! We are all waiting weeks or months to get ahold of book club books! Aubrey had an awesome idea so I thought I'd post it... she suggested we come up with books more ahead of time so that we all have chance to place them on hold, get a copy, then read it!! So, if you are part of the book club, and even if you aren't... please leave a comment with the name or names of books you want to read. Then we can make a list of the books we will be reading in the upcoming months, and we'll (hopefully) all be able to get a copy with plenty of time to read it and think about it, before discussing!

Book Club for June

Okay, so just so you know I haven't totally forgotten about our book club discussion for These is My Words this month...I just have one problem: I've been on a waiting list for this book for the past month and a half at my library! So...I can't really discuss it yet. Hopefully I get it soon and you all will forgive me as being the worst discussion director for not reading my own book yet...

Also, I'm not sure who regularly participates in Book Club who hasn't picked a book yet. So...if you would like to pick the book for July...just let me know and I'll edit this post to announce the book chooser. :) Thanks ladies! :)

Pope Joan Discussion

Alright, hopefully all of you ladies had a chance to finish this book. It's become one of my favorites and I was happy to have a reason to read it again! I can't wait to hear what you all thought of it.

May Book Club

So...its a lot of pressure being the one choosing the book to read. :) But after giving it some thought, I decided on These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner. I actually don't know too much about it, but its been recommended to me by a few different people and its a hot book club book right now, so I've decided that we can all read it together. :) If too many people have read it already, just comment here and I can switch the book (I have a lot of runners-up in my mind...). Anyway, we'll read it in May and discuss it in June...so HAPPY READING!! :)

Belated March Book Club!

Hi ladies! I'm moved and kind of settled so I wanted to finally discuss Life of Pi! I hope the remaining girls who were waiting for it from the library got it!

I got this book from my Mother in law a few years ago but couldn't make it past the prologue. I forgot about it for a while and then pulled it out this winter to try it again. This time I flew through the book. Don't laugh at me, but through the whole thing, I kept thinking, Is this a true story???

Some of the things I enjoyed in this book were: Pi's faith and desire to take all of the best things from the faiths he studied; how Pi trained the tiger so that he could live; the second version to the story-the one without animals and all of the parallels between them; the allusions to Pi's future; his survival techniques and how his upbringing prepared him for that; his name!

Some of the things I didn't quite get were: what was with the floating island? I wanted more confirmation about whether his story was believed or not. Maybe it doesn't really matter though! I hope you liked it, I was totally wrapped up in how and whether he'd live or not!! I found a good list of questions and discussion points online.
