Considering Aflac.

Just wondering if anyone here on Sugar & Spice has every considered or actually used Aflac Insurance with any of their pregnancies? I had a co-worker who did and seemed to have a good experience. I know there's a 10 month rule, gotta be paying the premium 10 months before giving birth, otherwise the coverage is void.

Anyone ever gone this route? What are your thoughts?

I know a couple of my coworkers a few years back did it and I have always been interested. They both had good experiences. I would love to hear what others think.

If you love in Utah the Aflac maternity policy may not be available anymore. I know they're doing away with it but I don't know when it's ending. There are other supplemental maternity policies out there too, and if you combine them you get a pretty good pay off. I know the name of a good broker in SLC who can help you with the policies if you want it. I have an Aflac policy and a supplemental maternity policy through Assurity. I haven't had to use them yet but I know my pay off will be worth it when I finally do get to use them.

Stace, we used it with James. It worked great for us. If they still offer the maternity coverage in Utah, we're planning to use it for our next pregnancy. Our policy was actually 3 different policies (personal illness, hospital coverage and something else) that was about $90/month and paid out $3400 right after James was born. It was awesome for us.

Of course, there are a few catches. If it takes you longer than you had planned to get pregnant, then it ends up being a lot of months of premiums without getting pregnant. Also, I had a sister who had it and miscarried and ended up paying for almost 2 years, but did end up coming ahead in the end.

We used it with our first child and it was wonderful, completely legit, and we ended up making money in the end even while we were paying out-of-pocket for major medical. We used Aflac and a few other policies to make up for our out-of-pocket costs. We also got pregnant right away with our first, which really makes a difference when paying for those premiums! We didn't use it for our second because we had way better health coverage, which ended up being good since it took longer to get pregnant. It's a risk, but worth it if it "your" timing works out!

We're doing it right now, so I haven't actually gotten the money yet, but I've talked to people who have and so that's pretty nice. But they have for sure stopped offering it in Utah and a few other states for maternity (unless you're already signed up) b/c its too good of a deal. So I'd make sure that wherever you live offers it still for maternity before signing up.

I'm doing it now (I'm due in May) and I've heard all positive things from it. We will have put $1400 in and we will get back about $3200 dollars. I live in Utah and the last day you could have signed up for it was Feb. 12th. It makes me sad!!

I would just echo the caution other said, about it being a risk if you don't get pregnant right away. I thought about doing it for my second, and was so glad that I didn't. It ended up taking us a long time to get pregnant, and I had two miscarriages within that time. And this was after having a successful pregnancy that didn't take drastically long to conceive with. So even if you've gotten pregnant easily in the past, it's a little bit of a risk.

But...it sounds like it's working great for a lot of people, so good luck!
