Christmas Eve
My family of four will be celebrating with just us this year, for the first time ever. I feel like I want Christmas Eve to be extra special. My kids are 3 and 18 months. If you have fun traditions or ideas to share for Christmas Eve, I would love to hear them. I'm also curious about what people like to eat for dinner on Christmas Eve.

We have our own Christmas Eve traditions, and then those that we do with Scott's family.
With Scott's family we all get together for dinner- it varies each year, this year we are doing soups and cold cuts. Then we read the Christmas story together and sometimes play games or just hang out.
Scott and I started our own traditions when we got married. First- the Christmas Elf brings Cecelia a piece of candy in her snowman bag that hangs on the Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve, he drops off a few wrapped presents- a new Christmas book (This year's is The Last Straw) and a pair of pjs. Cecelia puts on the pjs, we read the story and eat oreos and milk. Then we watch Mickey's Christmas Carol. Its nothing fancy or elaborate but we love it.
We have a dinner where everyone gets to pick out their favorite dish (even with 3, it ends up being a lot of food, but a lot of fun). Then we drive around and look at Christmas lights and come home to hot chocolate and homemade scones. We also come back to a present under the tree (pjs). We read Luke 2, put out cookies and milk and go to bed.
We read Luke 2 and then The Littlest Angel...this year we'll also make a box and fill it with things we'd like to give to the Christ Child and put it under our tree (just like in the book.)
We also open our gifts at midnight (when santa comes) and then we eat party food...and go back to bed!
We haven't had our own little Christmas Eve yet. We've always been with family. However, I was raised with a short "program" where we read Luke 2 interspersed with Christmas carols. I love adding the music!
We have chimes that my mom made for us (they're so easy! if you want to learn how, just let me know) and we play them (its hard with a small group, so you may have to make that a "party thing" until your kids get older. Anyway, we play Christmas carols on the chimes and then read Christmas stories, read Luke 2 and watch the Nativity, open a gift and go to bed. When we were growing up, all of the kids got to sleep in the same room which was fun. But still...my kids are too young to appreciate that now (and they already share a room), but someday I think it will be a fun tradition. Have fun together! :)
We wrap Christmas Jammies and a new Christmas ornament for the kids to open to wear on Christmas eve. When we have money my husbandand I also get matching christmas pajama pants. Then we drive around and look at lights or read Christmas stories and watch a Christmas movie. Last year we did Christmas dinner on Christmas eve but this year we aren't. I am not sure what I will do but probably pizza.
My kids at that age were too excited to go to bed to pay attention to anything extra special...we could barely get through "twas the night..." I hope you come up with a great new tradition!
