Membrane Stripping

Have any of you had your membranes stripped as a way to encourage labour? What was your experience like? I don't know that its something I would want to have done, but I've been looking into natural ways of encouraging labour since I went to 42 weeks with my first and don't REALLY want to do that again. I'd just like some opinions, thoughts, personal experiences etc. Thanks girls!

My friend has had it done twice now, and both times it sent her into labor within 24 hours. Of course, you want to make sure your cervix is ready enough, but it worked for her. Obviously, anything involving messing with the cervix is going to cause cramping, and she said she had cramps from that time on, but it was worth knowing the baby was coming.

We tried a few 'wive's tales.' Not sure if it helped or not, but two days after we tried a few things, I delivered.

It never helped me go into labor, I had it done 2-3 times with my first two pregnancies. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, my first was a week late and my second was a week early. Best of luck!

I know two people who have done it and it's helped them go into labor. They've also said it hurts. Truthfully I have no interest in it myself, but maybe I'm not as into the natural ways as you are.

I have had it done. The first time he could not do a true stripping because I was only a centimeter. But he did enough that it started unpainful consistent contractions. A day later the nurse at the hospital tried again. More contractions. Two days later a baby. I think he would have come without it but I know several people that it worked for them. I don't remember it hurting but if it did it wasn't bad and I think it is worth doing to try and get the baby out! I say go for it.

You can do pressure points too. I think that started my labor with Katelyn.

I didn't like it a all! It made me crampy and hormonal. I'm sure it works for some people and not for others. Always worth a try!!

I've never had it successfully done, but I had a Dr. try before. However, I am not one who is all about natural. I have no problem being induced (which I have only actually done once). If my Dr. isn't willing to induce at the moment, but is willing to stip my membranes then I would probably let them. Anything to get things moving :)

Never had my membranes stripped, so I can't give good advice on that. Just a thought though-I remember you saying Eva was measuring small. You may not want to try and hurry labor along too quickly. Don't mean to sound preachy-as I can't even imagine how miserable it would be to go two weeks overdue. However, when we were trying for so long to get pregnant and I was charting my cycles...it really opened my eyes to how due dates are just a loose prediction. You could have ovulated several days later, yada yada yada. Anyway, you may want to let her be a week or so overdue in order to get a little bigger!

I had it done with Austin and delivered him less than 12 hours later. So, worked for me and have heard of it working for others but also heard of it not working too. Good luck and hope you aren't too uncomfortable!!

claire!! it's jannet!! don't ask how i found this site ... i've been laid up for over a week and i tend to click on links.

anyhow, i had my membranes stripped with all 4 kids - usually 2 days before i was scheduled to be induced. by the time i got to the hospital with all 4, i was already in labor. i think it helped!! GOOD LUCK!!
