Book Recommendations, Please!

So, I have recently been hitting the library a lot more this summer because my son is enrolled in the Summer Reading Program there. Well it just dawned on me today that I could actually check out books for myself once in a while!! (my brain has been on vacation for the past year or so.)

I am not one (especially with 2 kids in there with me) to just browse the aisles and read the book flaps to find good ones. So I need some suggestions so I can go in with some names to check out.

I LOVE the Twilight series, Harry Potter and Nicholas Sparks books. So basically sci-fi,magical series or romances (not Harlequin type romances, obviously!) I am also open to mysteries and other genre's.

I have heard good things about Jodi Picoult books and wanted thoughts from any of you who have read them.

Also, I have read good reviews on The Time Traveler's Wife, but from non-lds sources so I wanted to see if any of you had read it and know if it is fairly PG-ish.

Thanks and I appreciate any and all suggestions!!

Leven Thumps by Obert Skye
Fablehaven by Brendan Mull
those are great if you love Harry Potter and both authors are LDS

I loved My Sister's Keeper and 19 Minutes but not all of them grabbed me as much. In fact, I can't remember the other titles off the top of my head.

I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. I read that last summer.

I read the Time Traveler's Wife and enjoyed it but guiltily. It's more than PG-13 if you ask me. There were too many f-words and too much sex but the concept is fascinating.

On my list this summer: (haven't read yet but i intend to!)
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society
the Alchemist

I really like most of the books that this site recommends: homespunlight.blogspot.com (Its a blog by a mom who reviews clean books...she also has posts about her family, but she has tons of book reviews and a list of her favorites.)

Some of my favorites that I've read recently are Fablehaven, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and I like all of Shannon Hale's books and Jessica Day George's books. Those are all young adult fiction books...but I'll be honest, they're my favorites. :)

I also really like The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom and These is My Words by Nancy Turner (but we read that for the book club on here, so you may have already read it).

I've read My Sister's Keeper and really enjoyed it...but I do recall that they dropped the f bomb quite a few times in that book.

My rant: What's with authors thinking that all characters must swear in an adult book? I think its lame. End rant.

I agree with your rant! It ruins so many books!

I was about to recommend homespun light!

Time Traveler's Wife is NOT PG-ish, just a head's up. Sexual content and F words.

Try Shannon Hale. She sounds just up your alley.

Awesome- I have just put a hold on like 7 books at my library- now I just need a babysitter for the next week!! Tiffany- as I was looking- there are tons of Percy Jackson books- so is there an order they go in- in the series? If so- the library site doesn't tell that and I would want to read them in order. Thanks Joni and Liz for the heads up on Time Traveler's Wife- I hate reading the F-word every other sentence!

My #1 recommendation is Erik Larson's The Devil and the White City. It's non-fiction (about the architect of the Chicago World's Fair and a serial murderer who was also there at the time), but it's intense...without being too intense.

I also love Shannon Hale (Goose Girl, Austenland, and Book of a Thousand Days are my faves). And Laurie King has a series of suspense/mystery books featuring Mary Russell, a teenager who is befriended by a retired Sherlock Holmes and who then becomes his partner. Sounds odd, but I LOVE this series!

I highly recommend The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I absolutely LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

I also read My Sister's Keeper and 19 Minutes. There is swearing in both, but I did like the books. I read The Glass Castle it is very interesting, but it is not PG.

My Sister's Keeper and 19 Minutes are great. I also really liked Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult.

Did you read any of our book club books with us? These Is My Words and Pope Joan were both AMAZING! I also really enjoyed Midwives.

I'm a fan of Nora Roberts and Mary Higgins Clark. I have yet to find a book by either author that I didn't finish and enjoy at least a little bit! There are obviously some I like better than others, but I've enjoyed all of their books. And they are easy mindless reads!! As in, I don't feel like I have to work to understand them, like I did with Pope Joan (though seriously, SO worth reading).

I vote for you to read Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. I am on book 3 and loving it!

Yes, sorry. Percy Jackson and the Olympians starts with The Lightning Thief and then Sea of Monsters and then I'm not sure of the order, but I'm sure each book tells you the name of the next...
