Frustrating feeding

My 6 month old is refusing to eat baby food. I read through the posts in the parenting section about it and got some great ideas, thanks everyone. I'll try my best to persevere, it's just so frustrating when he'll turn his head or spit out the food. I'm wondering though, do you think it would be okay to give him soft cut up foods like sweet potatoes, reg. potatoes, carrots or some other food? He has two front bottom teeth, not that he knows how to use them yet. I may get one of those net pacifier things that food can be put into so he can chew and get the juice. I'm also thinking about starting with baby puffs. Can he eat crackers or teething biscuits yet? I have a toddler but he was such a good eater, he didn't put up a fight at anything.

Absolutely cut up soft foods! Really soft stuff like sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, cheeses, etc. cut small enough are fine! Even ground beef in small, mushy chunks works! Mine HATED pureed baby food so we skipped right from cereal to table foods! she only wanted what we had! :)

I highly recommend the mesh feeding bags as well! It's great for more crunchy foods like apples and raw veggies!

I would stay with the gerber puffs over crackers until he's stable on table foods. the puffs dissolve and so are much less of a choking hazard than other cereals and crackers.

The puffs shouldn't be given to him until he has the pincher grasp and self feed. With my daughter we tried all sorts of things before it became clear that she only liked broccoli (strange I know). So I would just start running the foods you eat all the time through the blender/food processor, and maybe stick to the veggies for now, then try it. It took us almost 2 months before she would have anything to do with any sweets at all, but once she sucked on part of a ripe peach she was hooked.

I would say try soft cut up foods and if he has a hard time you can just wait and try later. He might be just fine though. I know quite a few people who have done it and there kids were totally fine with it and better eaters then my son!

At six months old it is okay if they aren't real good eaters yet. At that point milk/formula can still be their primary form of nutrition.

Try mashing up potatos, sweet potatoes, bananas, etc. If he still wants nothing to do with them, hold off for a few weeks, then try again. No use frustrating both he and you. It will come eventually.

We did Baby Led Weaning with my daughter and she LOVED it. (Google Baby Led Weaning to find info) We skipped baby food and cereal pretty much all together and went straight for foods she could eat and even feed herself, even at only 6 months old. Baked beans were one of her favourites. Along with canned green beans and mandarin oranges. Somewhere on my personal blog I have a post, complete with pictures of her first experience with this style of eating. It was great fun to watch!! She is now 16 months old and not only loves to feed herself, with silverware, but she will eat almost anything. Tonight, she was introduced to sushi (just a crab california roll) and loved it. Good luck!
