Gift exchanges

Does your family gift exchange? How do you do it? A friend of mind told me the other day that her Mom called for a "green" gift exchange this year. They each give to one person, it must cost $5 or less, and must be made or bought at a garage sale or thrift store. How do you do it?

On Bob's side of the family we each get one family to do a gift for each year. (This includes his parents as one family) All the gifts are to be homemade. This makes the gifts more meaningful and then the holidays are not too expensive trying to do something for each of his nine (yes I said nine) siblings and their families. I love it because homemade gifts are so awesome. We have received gifts such as quilts, homemade pillowcases for the kids, a wooden toybox and handcrafted art.

We're currently revamping ours since we got two new grandkids in our family this year. We're thinking of starting a cousin exchange for the grandchildren now that there are enough to do it. In the past several years, each of the kids has rotated and given gifts to another "family" (my unmarried bro and sis are a "family" together for now) but it's gotten out of hand. It's been a rough year for most of us, each of us has spent time out of work, etc. and so as we're all getting back on our feet, we're aiming towards a "homemade Christmas" but still figuring out what the limits are.

On my husband's side, we give to everyone because he just has two little sisters.

We give gifts to our parents. Then with siblings, we rotate names (both my side and my hub side). We set a $$ limit so that things don't out of hand. Not very exciting, but that is what we do.

With my extended family we do a gift exchage game with a $15 limit. You bring something you would want to end up with yourself, and then we play a little game that involves drawing numbers, trading, etc. It ends up taking an hour or so, and the experience itself, and the memories, are way more special than the actual gifts! (If you want more details on how we play, I can email you!)
