I enjoyed this book, but it took me a long time to read. It was a slow read, and a little dry at times. I found it interesting to read because I tend to sit halfway between the two "camps" in the book... I used a midwife when I delivered my daughter but I delivered in a hospital. I feel strongly about natural birthing, but I am also a firm believer that medicine has its place in our world and there are times when medical intervention is necessary during birth. (Going off on a tangent here...)
Anyway, I did enjoy the book. The twists were interesting. I had never noticed that the infamous "March 15th" entry hadn't been shared, so when I read it at the end I was a little shocked. Its sad to know that there was a chance that Charlotte was still alive and I kind of wish I knew for sure that she either was or wasn't. Though I don't think that information is necessarily relevant to the story- it seems to me that though she had doubts after making the inital incision, Sibyl was sure when she went to do the c-section that Charlotte was dead. Its an awful situation to even imagine...
I thought that this book was okay. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It definitely made me appreciate modern medicine and doctors..and it kind of made me scared about my upcoming labor (I'm due in 2 weeks). ;) I agree that the diary entry at the end was pretty interesting and thought-provoking. What a terrible situation to be in. And I'm sad for Sibyl that she ended up having to give up what brought her the most joy in life b/c of that experience. I'm sure that she did everything possible to help Charlotte and the baby and would've taken them to a hospital if she could've. Anyway, it was an interesting story.
Like I said before, I really enjoyed this book when I read it (several months ago) but it is a slower read. It wasn't until the end when her journal entry was revealed that I thought it was a really great book. I usually don't get surprised in stories (books and movies alike) so I love it when something can come out of nowhere and shock me!
