2nd delivery

What did you ladies do with child #1 when you were delivering child #2? I have thought about having parents take her, but I thought they might want to be at the hospital during my labor and delivery. There is always the possibility of having a friend take her, or other relatives... I just wanted to know what worked best for the rest of you. Did you have someone bring #1 up to the hospital once you started pushing or something so they could meet their new sibling right away or did you wait?

With my second my mom and grandma came into town to watch my first. During labor and delivery she stayed with my mom and came after the baby was cleaned and ready for vistors. I don't think I would have wanted her there during the labor. A little kid doesn't understand what is going on and would have probably been very upset to see mommy bleeding and pushing a baby out. I think she would have been somewhat tramatized and would have needed comforting at a time when mommy is a little busy and needs to focus on pushing a baby out.

When I had surgery earlier this year, my little one was totally traumatized by me being "sick in bed" and there was no blood or anything, so I don't want her at the hospital until I am ready to be chipper and assure her that I'm okay. I didn't have my moms at the hospital when I was delivering. Just my hubby. So I will probably have number one with them while number two is entering the world.

My Baby number 2 is coming really soon and I have been worrying about this exact thing! So thanks for bringing this up Katie.

I prefer that it just be my husband in the room when I deliver. It's our child, our moment. The family can come in just after the delivery. However, we don't have any relatives near by so we're relying on friends to look after Luke (babe #1). I also don't know exactly when I'll deliver so I'm not counting on family to be able to fly in right away to look after Luke. My Hub. and I will probably bring Luke to the hospital the day after I give birth. He's only 14 months old, so I don't think he'll really care about baby #2. My main concern is will be eat and sleep well with others? He's never been fed by someone other than me or Daddy and he has a hard time being put down to sleep by someone else. I just hope I will have family here by the time I come home so someone can help me with Luke. I don't know HOW I'm going to do this!!!!

Let me clarify, I didn't mean have child #1 in the delivery room. I just remember that when my SIL started pushing that is when we headed up to the hospital so her daughter would be there shortly after the new baby was born. Also, I guess I had a strange delivery because I had my mom, dad, sister and mother-in-law all in the delivery room with my husband and I for baby #1.

Katie, I don't think you had a strange delivery to have your loved ones in there with you! I'm sure it was great support. A lot of people have loved ones with them. I prefer that only my husband be there with me. I know I said this before but I'm delivering the child that my husband and I created, it's our special moment. I would feel like something special was being taken away from us if other loved ones were in there right as our child is born. (Dr.'s don't count. I ignore them, they have to be there.) I do want my family near so they can come a little bit after the delivery.

Katie, I don't know if you have other offers, but I would LOVE to take Reagan for you, and we would be happy to bring her to the hospital when you are ready. It's probably not the most convenient, since we don't live quite as close anymore, but I don't know if you have good friends in Howell yet.

I've heard people say they have a plan for in case they have lots of warning (like family coming to stay), and a plan in case it happens unexpectedly, like in the middle of the night, or a few weeks early. So I'd just talk to the people you'd like to help, and make sure Reagan spends lots of time with them and is comfortable. Like I said, we'd love to help!

Our best friends lived in the apartment below us. We left Big Sis with them and took the subway to the hospital. When baby was born about 5 years later, Big Sis came by about an hour later and said hello to her new sister, and spent the night with our friends at their house. We returned the next morning, so it was no biggie.

When my mom came to help, she was really great about giving Big Sis a lot of attention. As soon as she went to bed, my mom would give attention to the new baby, so that Big Sis didn't get jealous.

When I had baby #2 my SIL watched #1, but she only lived a few doors down so that was really easy for me. I have had both my mom and my hubby in the delivery room with me with all my kids and it was just as special as ever. When #3 came my dad watched #1 and #2 because it was a Saturday and he was home. However, I didn't actually have the baby until like 3am so my other two did not come until later obviously.

Now, with #4 I am a little more worried about. Not only do I have 3 little cuties that I need someone to watch, but we have moved 1200 miles away from our family. Luckily I have some really great friends here that are willing to take them. And I have back ups in case I don't have time to take them to my one friends house. If I am induced, I will probably have my mom fly in so that the kids can feel nice and secure at home with her.
