Sippy Cup

I'm looking for a good sippy cup for my 9 month old. She has no problem grasping the one we have (a Nubi) but she has a hard time holding it high enough to get the liquid into the nipple part. Which cups have you used and which ones do you recommend for this age?

We also use Nubi, but we do the ones with straws. My ped. recommended them because Cecelia is breastfed... for some reason bf babies do really well with straws. We started her on them at 4 months and she loves them. I love them because she doesn't have to tip them up to get stuff out... I know bottlefed babies who have done really well with the straw ones too. It does take a few days to get the hang of, but the straws have worked really well for us.

I like Gerber. They have ones with handles that are short (hold about 6 or 7 ounces) and with removable spillproof valves which is great for getting them washed. I like the option to not have the valve because it's better for the kid (but more messy!). I now love the Gerber cups without the handles for my 16 month old.

We love the Gerber ones as well (sip n smile or something like that)

thanks. We'll try the straws and the Gerber. Do the straw ones cause difficulty with regular drinking from cups?

I use the First years brand -

I bought them because they were really cheap and I was experimenting. I don't use handles, although one can attach handles to the take n toss variety. I have had a lot of success with them with my boy.

drinking a cup with a straw causes as much problem as using a sippy. Neither are "regular" cups and neither promote the jaw strength and swallowing pattern that regular cups provide. They are both based on sucking, just like a bottle, so it's still good to use a regular cup when you can and are able to control the mess! :) you guys must get sick of all my feeding therapy advice!

I think that I have pretty much always used Gerber.

I am all about the nubi straw cups. They are a lot healthier on babies teeth because when you suck a straw you tend to suck down whatever liguids in it instead of it sitting in your mouth. The other great thing is they don't have to be tipped. My son has been using one since about 7 months. They are awesome!

Oh I just read the question about straw cups and regular drinking. My son is just learning to drink out of a normal cup. He is almost 17 months and he is having no problem learning. I would not worry about that at all.

I like The First Years "Take N' Toss". I guess they're pretty generic and "cheap" but they work great. They don't really leak, only a few drips come out if it's turned upside down (unless it's left upside down). Handles can be attached to the cups if that's what the child needs. I also really like that these cups can change between sippy lids and lids with a whole for a straw. They're inexpensive too! Here's a link to a site I found that sells all kinds of these cups. I bought ours at WalMart but this site has a lot more choices.
