My daughter is 17 months old and still nursing. I am totally ok with this, as I'm not quite ready to give up nursing yet, but I am concerned about the fact that she won't drink cow's milk. Whenever I hand her a cup of cow's milk, she takes a sip, then hands the cup back to me and "asks" for something else to drink... I know she needs the calcium, and up to this point I haven't wanted to fight her on the issue, but seeing as she is nursing less and less, and I know we'll be weaning in the next few months, I'd really like to get her drinking milk. I've tried giving her chocolate milk (something I'd rather she didn't drink often, but I wanted to see if that would work) and she didn't like it. I have also tried giving her milk over ice, since she loves all other drinks ice cold. She drank a few sips more this way, but still hardly drank any.
What suggestions do you girls have??

I wish I had a good answer to this one. I was just thinking that I weaned my first one at 11 months and before she turned one and could have cow's milk, I wanted to get her used to formula so I would give her a combination of formula and pumped breast milk and eventually gave her straight up formula. Maybe you could try the same with milk although I suppose you would have to heat up the cow's milk...I'm not sure. Gradual changes have worked well for me.
I don't have a good answer, either. I am still not a fan of cows milk. (Of course, add chocolate to it and I love it.) Anyway, maybe try warming it like Linz suggested. Does she eat other products, like yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese? If so, just push those more often. My son only drinks about 1-2 cups of milk daily but eats a lot of cottage cheese and loves yogurt. Try that as an alternative to giving her calcium through milk.
I know other kids who have gone through this, and they didn't really start drinking milk until they were cut off from nursing. They just show a preference! As long as she's eating cheese and stuff, you'll probably be ok for a couple more months. Does she gain weight? I know whole milk has a lot of fat, and my pedi said the fat calories are good for brain development. So keep up the good efforts!
I was really worried about weaning Grant for the reason. I did do the mixing of breast and cows milk thing and it seemed to help, but I served it cold. He now loves cows milk, but in the mean time I did the yogurt, cheese and ice cream thing. Good luck!
Eden loves cows milk so I don't know if I can help but I do have one idea. If she like yogurt you could mix yogurt with the milk. Eden loves these (yogurt shakes) and she can use her straw to drink it (as long as it doesn't have chunks of fruit in it). It might be enough of a flavor change to get her hooked. Good luck.
Thanks for all the suggestions!! I love that between this and the other mommy blog I posted my question on, I'm finding that I am not the only mom dealing with this! I was beginning to think that Cecelia was a really odd child since most of my friends children drink milk like crazy. Today I tried a suggestion from my other mommy blog, of putting a small amount of vanilla instant breakfast into her milk. She didn't drink a ton, but drank more than usual. There are several other suggestions I am going to try and hopefully, with all our efforts combined, Cecelia will learn to like milk. Thanks girls!!
My son is 22 months old and is still not really drinking cow's milk. I nursed him until 19 months, so it sounds like we are in the same boat! But he loves yogurt so I feed him two or three Yo-Baby yogurts every day, plus a serving or two of cheese. The Yo-Baby is made with whole milk, you know, so I feel like I am still giving him plenty of calcium. I asked my doc about it at his 21-month check up and she agreed that he's probably getting enough.
