Dinners

I recently took dinner to a family in my old ward. Just a couple months ago I was on the receiving end of dinners - several women from church brought my family dinner after our second son was born.

I am curious - when you are asked or volunteer to bring dinner to someone, what do you bring? Also, what are some of your favorites that you have received?

I'll answer my own post: I usually make a casserole of some kind but this last time I bought a Papa Murphy's pizza and added a salad and some apples.

My faves have been homemade chicken soup with bread and a chicken/rice casserole.

Most recently I brought a Papa Murphy's too! With salad and fruit. I usually do a casserole or a pot pie.

I was super grateful for the generous meals the last time I gave birth, but everyone brought lasagna so I try to avoid giving that myself.

My favorite meal that I recieved was anything that involved wholesome, healthy stuff. One girl brought a delicious green salad, soup, and fruit. Perfect. Another woman brought a rotisseries chicken, roasted vegetables, french bread, and fruit. Also perfect. At least for me! I think a rotisserie chicken is an easy option to bring to someone. Pretty cheap at Costco and you don't have to make it.

I've taken a variety of things, but one that I find easy is to grab one of Costco's giant take and bake pizzas, then make a salad and take root beer and ice cream. Not necessarily the healthiest, but its a fun treat! I've also taken things like fried rice and egg rolls or casseroles.

As for receiving meals... we never have! When Cecelia was born, we asked the ward not to bring in meals as we had a lot of family around who took care of feeding us. Not sure what we'll do this time around...

I have taken a variety of things. I have done the Rotisserie chicken, enchiladas or lately I do these Sweet and Sour turkey meatballs (which are so awesome) with rice and some sort of veggie.

On the receiving end, we have gotten some pretty great stuff. I have 4 kids and have had surgery so, I have been brought a lot of meals over the past. Some of my favorites have been homemade chicken pot pie, chicken with homemade noodles and mashed potatoes with a fruit smoothie (this was one of my husband's favorites too) and chicken and broccoli rice cassarole.

Personally what I do after having a baby, is I ask the ward to please wait to bring me meals until after my mom has left. This way I am still getting help even though my mom has gone.

This is a little off topic but a ward I was in threw service showers for women that were having babies (if it wasn't their first, of course). So we would have a baby shower with food and visiting and then sign up to take meals or watch kids (instead of giving gifts). Once the baby is born, whoever threw the shower coordinated when the meals were brought. Super cool idea!

oh i miss papa murphys!!!!!
i usually take chicken wild rice casserole
sister schubert's rolls (freezer section best rolls ever!)
bag salad, then they don't have to return dishes!

my favorite was when someone made us chinese! It was so tasty and different but it was kind of risky because what if we couldn't eat peanuts or something

Hi, I just found your blog, and I don't know any of you, but thanks for sharing! I love these ideas. I am expecting our 4th in about 3 months, so we'll see what happens. My favorite I've ever received was some chicken curry that a gal in my ward brought me when I was camping out in the hospital with my baby who was in the NICU. It was so delicious!

Funny thing is that I haven't really had anyone bring meals for us, even though I have had three kids, because my mom has been with me for all three births. I have brought a lot of meals, but my favorite thing to do is bring multiple homemade frozen meals to friends. My mom has done 2 weeks worth of frozen meals for me before she leaves and it has made a big difference. I also like to bring homemade treats like English toffee or peanut butter bonbons so that the new mom has something to share with her visitors.

I like to make people homemade chicken pot pie. It is so easy, but so good!! And I always make it in the disposable pie pans from the dollar store so they don't have to remember to get a pan back to me!

Chantel, I had my mom there too and so when the ward asked to bring in meals, I asked them to do it when Mom went home and the REAL work began. It was awesome! The baby was a few weeks old but I was still getting my feet under me and it made it a lot less stressful!
