Landscaping

We just bought our first house a couple weeks ago. It is on a fairly big lot (for the suburbs) that is just under a 1/4 acre. The back yard is an overgrown mess of shrubs and weeds. We have a lot of work ahead!

Anyway, I wonder what you guys love/hate about your yards? We have 2 boys (2 1/2 yrs and 3 mo) and love to be outside. In Albuquerque, NM, we can play outside nearly year round. We plan on a fair amount of grass, a spot for a veggie garden, and some areas for flowers.

Any tips, tricks, suggestions would be appreciated. Is there anything you wish you had in your own backyard? Or a feature you always get compliments or a ton of use out of?

I wish I had a pool... Ü

Our backyard is really small... just enough room for a patch of grass, my rose garden and a shed. One thing I plan on getting soon is a swing and some end tables so Scott and I can sit out back while Cecelia plays. I also want some yard toys... that's about all we can fit though.

Eventually we are hoping to put in a small water feature in the corner of the rose garden area. Its low on the list of things to do though.

Things I always admire in a backyard- a garden, a nice sitting area, a play area and I have to admit, I kind of like firepits, even if they only get used occasionally in Arizona.

We too just moved into our first house and also have a ton of landscaping to do! My favorite thing is our bonfire pit- I just love bonfires!! Great for entertaining and the kids love making smores!

Oooh, I love bonfires too! Just make sure your zoning allows one! Where are you living? My favorite things are definitely the swing set and our fruit trees/bushes. We live in a mobile home park, so we have a small lot, but have blueberries, strawberries, apples, cherries and raspberries. By far, my favorite are the raspberries! And what's super fun is my almost 2 year old can go out and eat right off the bush. She loves going on a 'treasure hunt' to find the berries!

I'd also say, I love my perennial garden that's smack dab in the middle of the yard. We've always been by the house type of flower gardeners, but one day I got ambitious, took a can of spray paint, and sprayed an oval right in the middle of a hill. Now it's one of my favorite little spots! Don't be afraid of round edges or digging out the yard. Also nice are mailbox/lamp post gardens. Climbing flowers look really nice!

We love having a swing set (except that E is allergic to bug bites and we have lots of bugs so we end up going to the park more than using our swing set ... but I digress). We thought we loved our huge trees but have found that it means tons of leaf removal and too much shade to have a garden so I think we are going to remove 2-3 of them. We have a huge deck and I love that! Things I want: a BBQ Grill, Deck furniture, a garden.

How fun, I'm so excited for you!

You really should read a book called "Anyone Can Landscape"...it is very useful. Talks about figuring out what you want to use your spaces for and then using the landscape to accomplish those things...very good book. Really helped us do our own landscaping plans from scratch.

I ordered that book off amazon last night! Hopefully it will help us out. It is exciting and overwhelming at the same time.

Thanks for all your input ladies!
