Number 2

My son is just five months old and since we moved to AZ 2 months ago he has been having irregular bowel movements. I know, too much information, but I haven't yet found a pediatrician to go to ask about this sordid topic. When he does have them, the output is fairly normal. No dry, seedy, pellet-like, etc. stuff. The problem is that he only has them about once a week, if that. The first time it happened I gave him a suppository after 8 days. I was starting to freak out. Eight days is a long time to go. Since then (the end of June) if he hasn't had a BM by day 8 then I give him a suppository to help things along. I keep thinking I need to let him do it on his own, but then think I am a bad mom for not doing anything. Today (day 6 since his last one) he grunted, made "I'm hard at work" faces, whined, and kept stiffening his body all afternoon. No luck, nothing in his diaper. Before this started happening he would have a BM about every 3-4 days.

Basically, I don't know what to do. I am breastfeeding him. I introduced solids about 2 weeks ago and then stopped one week ago until his BM is a little more regular. I don't want to add to any possible constipation. I worry about the heat here in AZ so I have been trying to supplement nursing with water. He has plenty of wet diapers so at this point I am not worried about hydration.

Anyone have insight or experience?

My son hasn't gone eight days without a BM but sometimes he has harder/stiffer stools. My son wasn't getting enough fiber! I know the cereals can plug babies up a bit. I was also told by my pediatrician that it's normal for babies to have a BM even once a week. As soon as you find a ped. ask him about fiber and what you can do for your son. It's wonderful that he has a lot of wet diapers. When he does have a BM on his own is it normal soft stool or hard. My son doesn't have much diaper rash, but if he's had hard BM's I'm guessing his bum doesn't feel so great so I put diaper cream on him in hopes that it helps relieve some pain ... not on the inside of course, outside only.

Has anyone heard of benefiber? It's the fiber supplement that can go in drinks. I've never given it to my son but I want to ask his ped. if it would be okay to give him some occasionally. Does anyone know if it would be bad?

Also ... My Ped. gave me this info. He said -- There is hardly ANY waste in breast milk (and water). Your son's body uses almost everything in breast milk so there's not a lot left over for him to poop out. Unlike formula which has a lot more things that go to waste. If it were me...and my son wasn't grunting, crying, or trying really hard to get something out, I may stay away from the suppository once to see what he does on his own. I also heard that it may not be best for the baby to have a sup. too often, they may start to rely on that to poop. Talk with your ped. see what he or she suggests.

That's a funny post title! I was thinking it was going to be about a 2nd child, but I love that it was actually the poop number 2.

I have not had this problem but I've heard white grape juice helps. I know the other Bethany on this blog did that for her little one even when she was just a few months old. Hopefully she'll see this post and comment.

I would definitely talk to a pediatrician. My daughter's pediatrician was always surprised that she only pooped every other day so more than that in between sounds unusual to me. I agree with the cereal comment-most of them are also fortified with iron that stops them up. applesauce stops you up too so maybe peaches or pears for solids? Good Luck, i'm afraid I am not much help!

I have had children with pooping problems. Actually my oldest son still has some weird issues. Anyway when he was a baby something that my doctor told me was to give him oatmeal baby cereal instead of the rice. I am not sure about the benefiber. Whenever I have talked to my ped about his problems, they have never told me to give him anything like that. But I dont' know, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I do know, that it is not uncommon for some nursing babies to only have a BM once a week.

My pedi never seemed too worried about irregular bowel movements. He also didn't want me to use suppositories too often, so I agree-try seeing how long it takes him once to go without it. However, it never hurts to talk to your pedi about these things. He may even send you to a GI specialist. (I worked for one for awhile, and he saw lots of kids for constipation.) Pear juice works great for constipation, and we give it to newborns occasionally, so he should be old enough. You don't need much to do the trick!

I remember once my Mom said my little sister had this problem as an infant (sorry to embarrass you if you ever read this, G-she told me to try it once with my little one) and the doc told her to take her tempurature because inserting anything (like a suppository) will activate the bowels. (But my sister's 18 now and I never did try it with my own so i'm not sure if it's kosher or nor!)

Thanks you guys for all your insight! I will try the oatmeal cereal (he LOVES to eat and downs the cereal I give him, so I hate to stop) and the pear juice. Plus I better work on finding a pediatrician!
