Christmas Eve/Day Meal

What are your Christmas meal traditions? This year we'll be doing Christmas without any extended family, so I've been thinking lots about traditions we'd like to start in our little family. Any yummy dishes that you can't imagine Christmas Eve or Christmas Day without?

Our Christmas Eve usually consists of:
shrimp, beef tenderloin, artichokes, rolls, pomegranate salad, 7-layer jello, and crab legs.

Our Christmas Day has changed more over the years:
more rolls, pomegranate salad, jello, new potatoes in sour cream, ham/pork tenderloin.

dessert is usually strawberry meringue but that has changed too. Luckily this is all done by my Mom. The year we were at home because I was 8 months pregnant resulted in multiple breakdowns and much crying as i tried to replicate it! :)

We always had a big meal on Christmas Eve using the fancy china. It was usually a turkey but sometimes a ham. And then afterward we would build a fire (growing up in CA we never really needed to have fire so it was a treat) and tell the story of Christ's birth. Then we would usually start remembering the good old days...

We would also use this time to bargain with my parents about what time we could get up and open presents. I think the earliest we ever negotiated was 5:30. Then we would cook a big breakfast around 8ish and have leftovers the rest of the day.

My hubby's fam does it a little different - on Christmas day they have breakfast and get showered and everything before they open presents. They line up in order of age to go into the living room or wherever Christmas stuff is.

Since I've been married I haven't spent a Christmas without inlaws or outlaws of some sort.

Christmas Eve typically changes from year to year for us...but we usually have twice-baked potatoes (mmm-mmm good!). Christmas day we always have a big breakfast/brunch with pancakes and sausage and egg casserole and juice...its a good time. :)

Tradition-wise without food we always read Christmas stories on Christmas Eve (the feel-good service stories and true meaning of Christmas stuff) and play Christmas songs on chimes...and then open a present. Then we read the Christmas story in the Bible and Book of Mormon. It's really fun and special for us. :)

Growing up in a large family on an educator's budget we rarely got all-you-can-eat anything so my dad started the tradition of all-you-can-eat bacon on Christmas morning. Someone in the ward found out and for the next several years lots of bacon would show up on the doorstep. It is a fun tradition and memory.

My Grandma always made something nice for Christmas eve dinner. We had waffles or pancakes or something for Christmas breakfast, I really don't remember.

Our big thing is Christmas breakfast. My husband brought it to our marriage and I LOVE IT! We open presents and then make breakfast together. My favorite part of breakfast is something called "creamed eggs". I'll post the recipe if anyone wants it. We also have homemade cinnamon rolls, sausage (heh, not homemade) and orange juice. We did buy a turkey this year and we haven't decided if we're going to have if for Christmas eve dinner or Christmas dinner. My husband and I enjoy making homemade pizzas so I thought it would be fun to have pizza every Christmas eve. We'll see if that works out.

I'm curious about the creamed eggs!

My aunt and uncle do a Mexican feast for Christmas Eve. I think the pizza sounds like fun! Homemade pizza is always fun and that's the point-good food, family together fun!

Our family passes a bell around the table and whenever it is rung you have to say Merry christmas even if your mouth is full of food. It is so much fun! We used to say if you don't say Merry christmas then you don't get dessert but everyone always got dessert.
