I don't know if any of you are familiar with this product, but last night at Mutual, a leader was talking about ClearPlay. Apparently, its a special DVD player that you purchase. Then you rent or buy movies and download a filter from the internet for that particular movie. Then when you watch the movie, the downloaded filter blocks language, sex, violence, etc. To my understanding, you can block as much or as little as you'd like. Seems like a pretty cool product!!
The more I thought about it though, I started to wonder a few things. First of all... is it just as bad to watch the movie even if swearing is muted, since you might still be seeing the persons mouth moving? And how much do you have to filter in order to make a movie PG or PG-13 instead of R? Is it a bad idea to support the making of obscene movies, or movies with a lot of profanity by buying or renting them, even if we are filtering them?
Mainly, I'm just wondering what your take is on a product like this. If you want to check it out for more info, the website is www.clearplay.com. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this product!

My parents' bishop was with us for Thanksgiving and just got it. He was raving to my Dad about it. It's probably only a matter of time before I go home and Dad has it too! The bishop and his family are having so much fun with it! He says it's pretty much seamless and that it entirely skips the things you tell it to. He was using the example of the Tom Cruise "Samurai" movie (not sure of the exact name) and that it just skipped the intense battles and other things they didn't want to see. They aren't buying rated R movies now for it, they just rent them but they are really enjoying movies that they've always wanted to see but haven't been able to. I see the point with not wanting to support that media at all but I also think it's a brilliant way to be 'in the world but not of the world'.
Thanks for bringing this up... this is actually something my husband and I discussed since we are very protective over what we allow in our homes. A friend of ours has this and was also raving about the player.
But what it came down to for us was supporting bad movies and avoiding the appearance of evil. I heard a devotional given by a member of the 1st quorum of the 70 who said that we shouldn't support entertainment that goes against our values... he even we as far as saying that we shouldn't support entertainment put out by people who have very immoral values (he specifically mentioned Britney Spears because at the time (it was early 2000 or so) she said that she doesn't want to be a role model for anyone). But anyways back to my point. I can't bring myself to support rated R movies. Plus I would never want to have someone come over and find out that we have rated R movies in our home. There may not be a chance to explain that we have a DVD player to filter them. I'd much rather just avoid the appearance of evil. But that's just our take :)
Sounds like a good product. I don't think I will support rated R movies, but now I am realizing that PG13 movies sometimes have stuff in them that I am uncomfortable with. I would be love to get rid of that kind of stuff.
This is an interesting topic. I'm not sure of my position in total but I think that you shoudln't rent rated R movies even if you have ClearPlay. This is easy for me to say because I have never seen a rated R movie. I think it's harder for those who grew up being allowed to and are now trying not to. It's not that I consider myself super righteous, it's just that for me it's always been one of those commandments that is clear-cut and therefore I feel I can be 100% successful in. I need more work in other areas!
This is interesting though because there are some PG-13 movies that could be considered worse than rated R. I would consider, for example, seeing Little Miss Sunshine via ClearPlay.
I personally wouldn't buy it. I always have a long list of movies that I want to see for which ClearPlay wouldn't be necessary.
My friends have Clearplay and really enjoy it...they say they really like it especially for movies where they take the Lord's name in vain a lot. We had a discussion with them about it though and they said, "Of course we can't just rent any movie we want though and watch it and its okay, because some movies have truly evil messages, and clearplay can't fix that." And I think that's true. I really think that some rated R movies would be great to watch through Clearplay like Braveheart or the Patriot -- movies with good messages, but a lot of blood...but some, if they have evil messages cannot be fixed just by getting rid of bad scenes and bad words. I think that I would really like a Clearplay though, because I get so tired of watching a really good PG13 movie (or sometimes even a PG movie!) and having it totally be ruined by one scene or a few words. It makes me sad...and makes me not watch very many movies anymore!
I really wish that they would come out with a way of rating books...or at least warning me when a book is going to have a million swear words in it and a sex scene right in the middle! I feel like I'm stuck reading juvenile fiction if I want to be safe from any of that stuff!
My step dad has one of those and loves it. I think it is a cool idea. My parents do not watch any movies that say the Saviors name and even though the machine blocks it they still do not watch movies that say it. I think it is cool that they still keep there standard high even though they use it. My Mom said they watch most movies in it even PG ones. I will have to take a closer look when I am there this Christmas.
