Going Green?

First of all I have to share an experience I had at Walmart today. I recently purchased some reusable bags at Costco ( 6 big bad for $2, super cheap) and was really excited to use them now every time I go shopping. So I remembered to bring them to my Walmart trip and was waiting in line with a cart full of groceries. When it is my turn I hand the bags over to the cashier so that he can load my groceries in them. He gave me a weird look and said, "What are these?" and when I explained they were for the groceries he gave me and even weirder face. As I was helping him with my groceries I found myself being watched by every person in my line and the lines next to me. It was crazy. I began to wonder why I was getting so much attention for using my bags. I figured I must be an odd ball in San Antonio, Tx, and was wondering how different cities around the country support or show a lack of support for being green.

I think it can be a very regional thing. I was in JC Penney (in MN) today and they had "burlap" bags to buy but when I'm down south at my parents, I don't see people bringing their own grocery bags to the store like I do here.

Gosh that stinks. I think you're efforts are admirable. I'll join you and we can be two weird people in this crazy place.

I just noticed that the store I do my grocery shopping at has reusable bags you can buy, too. I think it's a great idea and I thought about getting some, but I wondered if I would always end up forgetting to bring them or they'd be a really big hassle to always have to bring to the store. Any thoughts on that?

I don't necessarily get weird looks when I take my own reusable bags, but the people at Walmart have NO idea how to pack them. Every other place I use them does fine... I always have people asking me where I got mine though...

Just keep doing what you're doing... you can be a trend setter! I know here in AZ the "bring your own bag" thing seemed to start with our local health food store. But after awhile all the grocery stores began offering reusable bags for purchase, and some stores have started to give you 5 cents back for each bag of your own that you bring...

Aubreydoll... I either leave mine in my car, or I have a basket by my door where I keep my diaper bag, and I put them underneath that... either way, I tend to see them before leaving for shopping trips.

Chantel, I was just thinking this morning about getting reusable bags for groceries!! Now I know to be prepared for stares when I go to the store with them.

A little side note. I think this may have been brought up before but wal-mart (thats the only store I've noticed so far) has cans for collecting their used plastic bags. After shopping I stash a few bags under my sink in case I need them and then I put the rest in another bag to take back to the store the next time I shop.

Good for you, for putting up with the stares. I think it's something that'll catch on and become less weird with time. I noticed these at the store lately, but we use our plastic bags pretty frequently, most often for tying up dirty diapers in! Maybe I can figure out a more "green" solution for keeping the stink out of my house!

I'm with stephanie! Plastic bags are great for taking out the dipaers :) And for a gazillion other things. Though once and a while I have to downsize my plastic bag collection and take them to the store for recycling.

Ithaca is noted as one of the most green cities in the US, so you defintely would not get stares for using reusable bags! I feel like I get stares for not :)

The EXACT same thing happened with me last week at the grocery store. I really think people just need to see other people doing it...or maybe we could get one of these famous celebrities to do it once, then we'll all be doing it ;)

I must admit I didn't know that this was becoming a popular trend. I don't think I have seen anyone out here is Utah with reusable grocery bags! I think it is great that some of you are using them but I sure do like the convenience of grocery bags. I use at least one or two a day. I also just recycle them when I don't need as many as I have. But way to go to all you who use the reusable bags!

I don't think using plastic bags from the store is a problem, as long as we're all trying to reuse or recycle them.

Good for you for using them! Next time just smile and explain that you are saving the earth one bag at at time. I say that EVERY time I use mine, and it's very effective.
