Cup or sippy cup?

I'm just full of questions today.

So I was reading in "What to Expect the first year" about weaning your child from a bottle at 12 months (or so) and that the next step is the cup. Does that mean sippy cup or regular cup or is it just personal preference? Do you use regular cups when you are in the comforts of your own home and sippy cups when you're on the go?

I'm such a newbie mom.

Luke is still on the bottle ... It'll be a while before he's off. He's almost 8 months. Even so, I let him drink out of a cup every now and again. Usually once a day because he sees me drinking and wants some. I only let him drink if I have water! He does well enough for a beginner. I also bought him a sippy cup that has a straw but he hasn't figured out how to suck through it yet.

When he's older we'll start with a cup at home and a sippy cup when we're out. If we're at a restaurant I'll probably let him use a cup. Who knows...we'll just have to see how he adjusts to cups.

Sorry, that probably wasn't really helpful. Just thought I'd share my point of view.

I am all about the sippy cups. I use them at home and on the go. Of course, my older ones use a regular cup now and even my little one will. Even though he almost always spills. However, I am a very big fan of the sippy cup.

I think it totally depends on the child. My 22-month old son is definitly not ready for a regular cup so we use sippy cups all the time. We let him have sips when we're drinking out of a cup and I always give him a chance with the little cups in nursery, but they inevitably get crushed and thrown on the floor!
Whatever works for your daughter and your family is what you should do!

I think sippy cups are easier to for them to work with at first. And I've noticed that from there when kids are ready (which may be before you are) they will start experimenting with regular cups and want nothing to do with the sippy cup. The sippy cups by Gerber with the handles on the sides and soft "sippy" spot are great to start. I think it's what you're comfortable with just because sippy cups are good all the time if you don't want spills and stains.

My son is almost 2 and for him it is ALWAYS a sippy if I'm giving him his own drink, unless it's water. We're venturing out into very shallow amounts on his own, but he just makes such a mess.

Even my 4 year old still uses sippys when I don't want anything sticky spilling.

As long as your kid knows how to drink from a regular cup, I don't think he's going to lose the skill if you give him a sippy.

Sorry for the late post. The other girls already said what I would have (Haley still uses a sippy cup when she's not sitting at a table--I just don't want to deal with the mess!). However, I did just think of one thing to help with the transition to an open cup. When Haley was really little, we'd give her a cup with a little water while she was in the tub, so she could practice without making any mess for us to clean up!

The only thing I would add is that practice with open cups (like Haley in the tub) every once in a while is good. It's not so much that they drink out of open cups all the time, but that they are getting the skills to do it once you trust them! :)
