Vacuum cleaners

Anyone have a vacuum cleaner you love, that you would recommend? Ours died the other day. It was never great to begin with, but now it is definitely out of commission. It stinks because you can't really go without a vacuum for more than a couple days, so I need to buy one now without having a chance to save or anything. So, we don't have the money to get a really nice one, but at the same time I don't want to get a cheap one that doesn't work good again! I helped a lady from our ward clean her house last week. She had a vacuum cleaner that practically propelled itself, had great suction, AND had a retractable cord (which I fell in love with.) But I don't think they make that one anymore. Anyway, sorry for the boring post, but it'll really help me to hear your input!

We're in the same spot so I would NOT recommend the Dirt Devil Featherlite! The suction was never ever good to begin with! My Mom keeps recommending her Oreck but those are expensive!

We invested in a Dyson and LOVE it...but its expensive. It's a WAY good cleaner though and very easy to empty.

I totally would recommend a Dyson. It's expensive, but will last FOREVER. I don't own one yet, but I clean my uncles house each week and love that cleaner. The filer get's changed every time you empty it, so it's always getting all the dirt out of the carpet. You don't have to fuss with all the bags and mess and you can see what you are cleaning up. I should be a sales rep...:)

We bought the Dyson pet vacuum. It's meant to pick up pet hair. We don't have pets but my long strands of hair can be found everywhere. The vacuum is great. It picks up everything! I love that I can see what I'm picking up. Kind of gross actually, thinking how much is there even after just a few days.

Natalie, your uncle must have a different version, I didn't know the filter could be changed every time. I'll have to do some research on mine.

Our old vacuum is a Eureka "Whirlwind". It did a great job too. We bought it just after we were married and it still works. We've been married almost 5 years. The only problem we've had is a broken belt, our fault though....tried to suck up something and it got caught in the brushes and broke the belt. Easily fixable.

I have an oreck and love it. It is really light, which makes cleaning the stairs easy. We definitely didn't get the most expensive model, ours was like $200. What I also like is that when you buy a vacuum they give you like 5 free tuneups. Every year I take it in to make sure it is still working well. Also I know that my vacuum filters out allergens, which is vital in texas.

My mother-in-law got us a Dirt Devil Reaction with a HEPA filter (I have no idea what that is, but she's a cleaning fanatic and insisted on it). They have a Dyson, but that was not exactly in the budget for a Mother's Day/birthday gift for me. :) We absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It's bagless, extremely easy to empty, and easy to clean (the couple times we've bothered). And my favorite part is that I can be pushing the vacuum and use the attachment hose at the same time (as opposed to stopping to make sure it's upright before being able to suck up the bowl full of dry Cheerios that my daughter has dumped on the floor). It's $150 at Target (the candy apple red one, not the "Fresh Upright" version).
