I moved my oldest to a toddler bed about a month before she turned 2. Since she wasn't climbing out yet, we would have kept her in it longer, but our baby was born a week after #1's birthday, so with bassinet time, #1 had about three or four months in the toddler bed before seeing her crib "taken over" by the baby.
I don't know when we'll move #2 out of it. Looking at other people's experiences, the upside to moving them out early is that they don't get attached to the crib, but the very obvious and exhausting downside is that they can very easily get out of bed, and possibly out of their room (eeks!). That said, for #2 I think I'm gonna take the lazy mom's approach and keep her in the crib until I absolutely have to move her to a bed (or until my husband wins his campaign to get them a bunk bed, which I personally think is insane for kids under three--especially since our baby is a climber)!
I moved my two oldest right around their 2nd birthday. Only because I always had a baby that was now too big for the bassinet and needed the crib. I never had down time with the crib. As soon as we moved big brother to the bed, little brother went into the crib. Big brother never seemed to have a problem with baby in the crib. He never got jealous. With my oldest, he slept in a toddler bed for like 2 nights. I didn't like it because it just seemed so small, so then he had a double bed. When baby #2 was moved to a bed we had a bunk beds. Although, I used them as 2 seperate twin beds for a while because they were still little to me. I don't know what I will do with #3. He is almost 2 and I am all about him staying in the crib. We don't have another baby right now who needs it.
My kids are 18 months apart...so when we just moved to our new house (yay!) Scarlett (my 4 month old) was outgrowing the bassinette, so Guy (my 22 month old) HAD to be moved to a toddler bed. I was worried about him falling out and what-not, but we got him a sleigh bed with guards only on the upper half. The first two nights he fell out (aw!), but now he sleeps soundly and doesn't get out of bed even for naps....so far so good.
We gave him a little touch light (with a smiley face from Walmart - 93 cents) the first night, and made it a big fun deal to be in the bed. I think that helped.

Both my kids moved into a toddler bed between 24-28 months with not a single issue.
