International Travel

Have any of you traveled abroad with little ones before? My husband and I have been offered a chance to spend a week in Jerusalem in March, but we have to decide this week if we want to go. I have never been there before, and I doubt we will ever have the chance to go again (especially for free.) However, I don't want to go if it will be torture traveling with an 18-month old. Any thoughts?

How long is the flight? I've never traveled internationally with my little one but you should just go for it. She will inevitably sleep during parts of the flight and you will just have to tell yourself not to worry about what others are thinking if she's fussy. You'll never see those people again.

I feel strongly you should continue to LIVE your LIFE post-baby. I should probably take my own advice! Your little one was added into your life and should not overtake it. Just do it and try not to worry while you're traveling!

You should totally do it. I've never traveled internationally, but 4 out of 5 times I've flown alone with my daughter - the thing that saved me was taking her car seat to the gate just in case there was an empty seat. If there's not an empty seat they will most likely check it at the gate for you (I would check with the airline about their policy). I also don't know how full international flights are (although I would imagine they are pretty full so this might not work anyway). The only other thing I might suggest would be if you are getting your flight for free maybe there would be somebody in your family or your husband's family you could fly out to watch your little one. If that doesn't work, I think whatever you might have to deal with having an 18 month along would be worth it to go on a trip like this.

DO IT!!! I think that later on down the road, you'd regret not going...

my brother and his wife took their son to Spain and all over Europe when he was 12 months old and they had a great time! It was pretty easy for them and he was great. I think the naps were the hardest for them and he would just sleep in his stroller as they walked all over towns!

GO! GO! GO! Like you said, you'll probably never have another shot at a trip like this, and kids can be angels or cranky-pants, regardless of whether they're on a long flight or not. It'll be fine! You deserve this trip!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies! I really want to go, but didn't want to be selfish. Thanks for the advice!

Awesome opportunity Katie! I think you should go for it too...although you might want to check with your Dr. Won't you be pretty far along in your pregnancy then? A lot of Dr's wouldn't recommend going abroad after a certain point in the pregnancy. Just a thought!

Someone mentioned something about if there is room to take your carseat on the plane. Well, kids under two DO NOT fly free on international flights so, there will be an open seat since your daughter will need a ticket. I have a cousin who lives in Brazil so, she travels internationally with her kids all the time that is how I know about babies not being free. Is her ticket part of the free deal? I had a friend who went to Europe pretty far into her pregnancy and her doctor told her to go for it.
