Linz, I was just thinking about this the other day but haven't had time to post. I'm planning on moving Luke to a bed when we move. Luke will be about 20 months and Harrison will be 4-5 months and will have grown out of the bassinet and will need the crib. I'm still debating on getting a toddler bed, a regular twin bed or putting a mattress on the floor. Of course, I will be getting some sort of railing if he's in a toddler or twin bed.
I'm thinking about getting a second crib that converts into a toddler bed because I really don't think my oldest will be ready for it until she's at least two or so!
Our 25 month old is still in her crib and I'm keeping her in as long as I can! She'll be 2.5 exactly when her sibling is born in August and I plan to transition then or sometime during the summer (I don't want to throw potty training and new bed at her at the same time!). That will give the new one a few months in the bassinet and the old one a few months in the bed before the coveted crib is taken over again.
I have to admit, I think toddler beds are a waste of money. You're going to have to buy them a real bed later anyway so why spend the money on a transitional bed? We already have the soft rails for the side of the twin bed to keep her from falling out and we're planning on just putting the mattress and boxspring on the floor until she's big enough to climb in and fall out safely.
Linz, in response to your comment, do you put your newborn directly into a crib? Will they really be in the crib at the same time for long? Ours slept in a moses basket for four months which I'm hoping also gives us time with the next one if the transition doesn't go well.
I agree with Liz that a toddler bed is a waste. I moved my 2 older boys to a bed at pretty much 2 years exactly. By that time the baby we had was 3 or 4 months old and ready to be out of the bassinet. When my 3rd boy was 2, we didn't have an infant so I kept him in the crib longer. We did however put him into a bed like 3 months after he turned 2. He shares a bed with one of his brothers right now.
My sister moved her son to a bed well before he was 2, and my SIL moved her daughter around 2. I opted to go with a toddler bed because my kids will be sharing a room and space is limited. We didn't want to spend the money on a second crib, the toddler bed was under $50.

I have the same question! We got a toddler bed and we're preparing Isaac for it as we speak.
