Weaning Question

My daughter is 10 1/2 months old and I have just weaned her to formula. Prior to my weaning her she seemed to want less milk (she has been at 4-6 oz feedings for several months). She eats quite a bit of "solids" these days and enjoys drinking water from her sippy cup. Should I be concerned if she drops a bottle or reduces the amount she is getting? Any advice you have is wonderful, I always appreciate hearing your input.

We haven't weaned yet... but, when my daughter was about 9.5 months old, the amount of times she nursed seemed to decrease drastically and suddenly. I was really worried that maybe I wasn't producing enough anymore and that's why the lack of interest in nursing. I called my doctor and he reassured me that it was fine, and as long as she was eating other meals (ie- solids!) and still had plenty of wet diapers, that she would be fine. Hope that helps in a round about way!

I agree-as long as she's eating solids good, and having lots of wet diapers you should be fine. Also, I wouldn't push the bottle if she's losing interest. Maybe she's just going to be a really easy baby to wean from the bottle period. Have you thought about putting formula in the sippy cup, since she seems to like taking water from it? In another month or so you can just give her whole milk in her cup with meals, and you won't have to worry about bottles at all!

I worried about the same thing when I weaned! Mine wasn't even getting 24 oz! The doctor reassured me that she was getting the needed vitamins from cheese and yogurt, which she is a fan of, and also reminded me how much liquid she was getting from fruit and other solids she was eating. She also said the same thing that was mentioned before-if i was really worried, go back to counting dirty diapers!

Sippy cups worked for me at that age. And I second what has been said.

I have nothing new to add, either, but want to comment anyway. :)

I wouldn't worry too much. Like others have said, count diapers if you are worried.

It has been a little hard for me with my son as he is transitioning from baby to toddler. I keep thinking of his eating habits as baby, but really he wants to transition. Someone told me that between one and two-years old toddlers don't grow or gain that much weight (compared to their first year when they can double or triple in size).

So far I have let John take the lead. He snacks between meals on a drink and some solid foods (apple, crackers, whatever I give him).

Eden is too cute. I agree with Stephanie - maybe she will be really easy to wean. That would be AWESOME.

Thanks all. She took breast milk from the sippy cup but then totally stopped for some reason (it was when she was sick, maybe it hurt her ears to suck the straw or something). Anyway, I've tried the formula in the cup and it works great. I'm looking forward to the whole milk option!

Thanks again for your advice and reassurances.
