ADD / ADHD

I don't know much about ADD or ADHD. One of the students in my primary class has ADHD. I was told that he is given medication for it on the weekdays but not on the weekends. That seems a bit odd. Shouldn't he have the medication every day?

it probably depends. if the meds are primarily to get him through the school day and specifically to focus on sitting in school, he may not need it on the weekends. i would just mention any concerns if he's acting up a lot to your primary presidency.

Liz is right, especially if there are negative side effects they might not give it to him on the weekend.

In my home ward there was a little boy who they only gave it to on weekdays for helping him focus on school. I think it is just a parent choice. Kids with ADHD do not HAVE to have medicine but it helps them to calm down and focus and it changes them. Maybe the parents feel like there child is more himself without the medication. Just a thought. But I would just try and be supportive and do what you can to help the family.

I'm a little late commenting, and I've never commented on this blog before, but I think I can give some inside info because my daughter has ADD. Because the meds don't have a cumulative effect (they work for several hours then off completely)it is very common to medicate only at times when prolonged attentiveness is a necessity, like in school. The meds do have side effects. In my daughter's case they increase her anxiety and affect her sweet personality. She needs the meds to function at school, but can do fine in shorter and more varied situations, so there is no need to medicate her on the weekends. I prefer the "real" girl to the medicated one but am glad for the meds because they have contributed so much to her success in school. Check out www.lds.org/disabilities under learning disabilities; it gives some great suggestions for teaching those with ADD or other such disabilities.
