HFPE

The other night I went over to the church building and happened upon a cute Enrichment Counselor in one of the wards that meets in our building. It was about 7:15 and she was sitting all alone waiting for anyone to show up for her activity. SO SAD! She had everything set up to assemble some small toys for children that were donated from a small company in town called the "Happy Factory." Anyway...I was so bummed for her and all of the hard work that she put into the activity.

I believe that the new set-up for the Enrichment program was divinely instituted and it's so neat to be able to choose from lots of different activities to attend and get to know the ladies in your ward. I have an incredible Enrichment Counselor in my ward who is actually one of our contributors (Abby....you go girl!)!!! We've done lots of cute and creative activities.

I was wondering if we could use this post as a forum to share some of your favorite Enrichment activities. What activities were most memorable? What activities were best attended? Did you learn anything really cool that you never would have learned otherwise? Chances are that sometime in our lives...we will be involved in the planning or carrying out of an Enrichment Activity. Never hurts to have lots of good ideas in your back pocket!

One of the best and most useful enrichment nights I ever had was when a girl in our ward who was a hair stylist showed us step by step how to give a good, basic haircut for men at home. A lot of the moms in our ward really appreciated the little tutorial and a lot of the primary boys in the ward started looking much better.

Thank you for the post staci. This year I was called to be the Enrichment Leader and needless to say, I have no idea what I am doing. I could use all the ideas that I can get.
Ps. We too have had that haircut lesson in our ward. However, she used the clippers and my boys absolutely FREAK if I bring the clippers near their heads :)

Here are a few ideas that I read about: SO fun!!
- A "Prairie Party" Make (inexpensive, of course) aprons and encourage pioneer dress, cowboy hats, boots, etc.
It could even be called "Back in the day" or "Pioneer Prairie Party" "Sisters on the Prairie"...or something like that.
Have a pie baking contest, home-made ice-cream, lemonade.
Learn how to jar pickles, or jam, something like that as a demo in the kitchen...
Have an old fashioned story by the camp-fire, learn a pioneer song or have a few sisters share what a typical pioneer day would be, etc.
you get the picture? Perfect for July, Pioneer Day.
- A Self-Defense Night
- A "Sharpen Your Skillz" Night and have ladies teach skills like a hairsytlist teaching how to do a boy haircut and baking bread or something like that.
This was a Stake Activity one Stake Did:
- Tricks of the Trade - Household tricks, tips and hints
- A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned - Coupons, meal planning, shopping
- Meet the Chef - Basic cooking knowledge (demonstrations)
- Emergency 101 - Basic First Aid
- Now That I Have it, What I Do I Do with it With it? - Food Storage
- I Made It Myself - Money saving mixes of all typed
- 72 Hours On My Own and Making a Documentation Book - How to Survive in an Emergency
- Dinner is Served - setting a proper table, table manners, etc
- Head Shoulders Knees and Toes - A Fashion Show

Man--your experiences have exceeded mine. I went to a cool table decorating one once. I think it would be cool to have like an AUTO 101 Enrichment. Anything with organization, food storage, or cooking is always good for me.

I really like ones where you make useful things for your family. We put together a FHE binder once, with 10 prepared FHE lessons. I loved that! And my friend is a counselor in the RS in her ward, and they are going to be making quiet books for children at their next activity.

One thing I've been to a swap: bring all your "stuff" you've been waiting to take to goodwill and then it's a free for all. I got an answering machine that's worked for four years just great that way, and a statue that is like one my Mom had that I love having in my home. At the end of the night, the RS takes the rest of the stuff to Goodwill for you!

We are doing the FHE lesson swap and the children's quiet books in one of our midweek activities. We too have also done the swap thing (a couple of times)

I haven't historically supported enrichment... but some things my ward has done:
1. Every other week gather for scripture study/ spiritual topics discussion. The lady in charge of this one started out one week assigning out different religions - the next time they met they discussed the religion that was assigned to them. They also have started to go through the "preach my gospel" book to guide their study.
2. In the fall there was a garden/produce exchange.
3. Make small crazy quilts.
4. Learn to make bread (was divided into those with breadmakers and those who wanted to do it by hand)

So these are ideas, but like I said I haven't really supported any of them.

I am the Enrichment counselor in my ward. Some activities that we have done include; a cooking class, where we had 4 to 5 sisters demonstrate a recipe. At the end everyone recieved the recipes and tasted the food. It was a lot of fun. We're also making quiet toys and having a panel discussion about how to keep the children quiet in sacrament. Our June Home, Family & Personal Enrichment is going to be the "Price is Right". We're going to set up some of the price is right games. Then we are going to have classes that are on budgeting, thrifty living, free/cheap intertainment, and others that follow along with the price is right theme. We also had an enrichment on trash to treasure and on decorating tips.
