I Hope They Call Me on a Mission....
This past weekend my cute little (he's actually LOTS bigger than me) brother opened his mission call and will be reporting to the New York Utica Mission in a matter of months. I am so thrilled for him and know that he'll make an incredible missionary. In preparation for his big departure, I've been thinking of all of the things I want to send him off with or work on while he's gone to give him when he returns i.e. a recipe book or scrapbook of pictures and letters and such. I was just wondering if any of you ladies had experience with this kind of "sisterly" mission prep. or if you served a mission and can think of the most favorite thing you had or wished that you had. Any ideas?

And what do missionaries like to get the most while on their missions? (Stacibee, I can't believe our bros are getting their calls so close together! My bro's expecting to open his TODAY!)
I lived in Orem when my brother was in the MTC so we had lots of fun with same-day deliveries and sent all sorts of food and ice cream packed carefully! I would say that food continues to be near the top of the list throughout the mission. My brother's loved cereal and peanut butter and foods like that which were VERY expensive where they were (Spain and Japan).
Email has made writing much easier because that obviously is an important one and we had lots of fun with tapes because hearing each other's voices was always more fun. Especially with little kids who change so quickly!
Other than that, the big thing I remember was that sending them "stuff" was tough because they had such limited luggage, so we were always trying to find things they could use, rather than bulk up their suitcases.
I LOVE it! You'll have to keep me updated!!
I served in Thailand, and Liz totally nailed the missionary's wish list. It's all about FOOD. And lots of Christmas and birthday presents. Okay, any mail in general is HUGELY welcome. Who doesn't love getting real letters in the mail?! Just don't expect a single sentence in return, especially after the first couple of months. We didn't have email access at that time, but I'm guessing that snail mail is still appreciated. He really will appreciate hearing from you, though!
My husband's mom made a mini scrapbook of the family for him to take with him. He said he really loved it, especially because missionaries like to show pictures to their companions and people they meet. It was small enough to easily fit in his luggage. She did a page for each sibling and then a few pages of some of their favorite moments as a family. He said he really appreciated having that.
Ooooo. I like that idea Joni.
Joni that is a really neat idea. It made me remember that when my brother was on a mission-I had him send home pictures periodically and I did his mission scrapbook for him. It was a fun thing for him to look at when he came home--it was all done!
