Car seats in summer

What do you do to keep your car seats from being burning hot in your car while you're inside the store?

My car seat is cloth, so I don't think that it gets really hot in the sun. However, to keep the buckles from getting too hot you can put a blanket or piece of clothing over it.

I noticed once on babycenter.com that they sell tent-like covers you can put over your car seat when it's not in use. It looks like it's made out of the same material as those shades you can put in your windshield. I don't know how well they work but if you're interested it might be worth looking into.

Down here in Florida it's hot all year round and we have a black car, so we got our back and rear-view windows tinted as dark as legally possible and that helps. I also turn on the car's AC before I put Collin in his carseat. And the poor kid gets carted around in nothing but a onesie and bare feet the majority of the time, so that keeps him cooler in the car. Oh, and if the buckle is hot, we put a burp cloth in between his legs so the buckle doesn't touch his bare skin.

I like the burp cloth between the baby and buckle idea! Ours is black and it's starting to get hot (in the frozen north :) so I've been brainstorming the same thing. Great ideas everyone!

These are good tips... I am moving to Phoenix next month and I am sure this will become a major issue!

Another great way to use burp cloths in the car seat is to fold it up as a pillow for the side of your baby's head when (s)he falls asleep. If Collin's head just touches the side of the car seat he gets really sweaty, but the cotton of the burp cloth absorbs the sweat better.

Burp cloths are the most versatile pieces of fabric I have ever known! :)
