Car Travel

Okay ladies, I need you to really crack open your brains for this one.

We are about to embark on a road trip that will total (gulp) 48 hours in the car. I have a four year old girl and an almost two year old boy. Movies - check. Snacks - check. Benedryl - check. But we are inevitably going to encounter times where the kids need new entertainment. Any ideas? PLEASE!

We went on a lot of family road trips as kids and one thing my Mom always did was have something new and special for the trip. It was usually legos for the boys and coloring books and new crayons for me! We couldn't open them until the trip, so she'd wait until we were bored to open them. My brother continues the tradition with his boys and gets a bunch of cheap small things so he can spread them out over long trips.

I always liked writing down the states on license plates that I saw but I think your kids are too young.

My mom bought a travel bingo game once. I'm sure there's something like that still out there. It was based on things you saw outside the car like cows, road signs, and stuff.

Do you have a portable DVD player? I don't myself but I plan to in the future!

Bring a varied and big collection of CD's and SING SING SING!

P.S. Let us know how it goes! You are awesome for taking on this endeavor! Are you staying within the country?

Trip goes from Omaha NE to Columbus OH to Palmyra NY to Danbury CT to Allentown PA to Columbus OH to Nauvoo IL to Omaha NE in 13 days.

My parents are serving a mission in Palmyra and friends and family are all along the way.

That sounds like a fun trip!! I was thinking that since your kids are too young for the license plates game, maybe you could play the alphabet game, number game, or even make up a color game (like, "Who can find something blue?"). Hey, that's kind of like "I Spy"! Anyway, that might keep them entertained for a few minutes at least. ;)
