Conference Notes

I didn't get to watch as much conference as I wanted to this time. My in-laws were having a mini-reunion and conference doesn't affect them so we had to make conference a lower priority. It's my goal to watch the sessions online and read the Ensign to catch as much as I can of what I missed. We'll see how well that goes. :)

One of the things I did enjoy was the missionary theme from Saturday afternoon and Elder Tenorio's talk on eternal families from Sunday afternoon. What did you enjoy? What thought or talk impacted you?

I liked the talk Elder Oaks gave Sunday afternoon about the importance of having our kids home with us - how important it is to have family dinner and not to let our kids get too busy. I also really liked Sister Beck's talk about being the best latter-day saint women we can be. I like how blunt she is. She basically said there's no excuse for us not to be good mothers and homemakers. We are blessed with the knowledge and resources we need to raise righteous children and create spiritual homes.

I have been hearing awesome reviews of Oak's talk, which I need to read/watch, and really heated comments over Beck's talk. I have to say, I wasn't liking where it was going at the beginning, and decided to take my bap then...after reading it, it's not AS controversial as I thought it would be, but still hits some sensitive spots in this working mother's soul...

I also really enjoyed Elder Oaks talk. It really made me realize that I need to put things into the proper perspective (good, better, best) in my life. Also, I liked President Eyring's talk a lot. It made me realize that I need to be a better journal keeper for one, but also that I should always be looking for the hand of the Lord in my life.

I definitely agree with Bethany! Elder Oaks and Sister Beck. However, Elder Wirthlin's talk really struck me hard. Not only what was said, but what happened during it. You certainly can't read or hear about that experience, you have to watch it! I was so touched! Here was a man, who by the world's standards is old, and crippled, but as he stood there shaking and almost unable to speak, he spoke of how God sees us as glorious beings. At that moment, I could see the person our Heavenly Father saw and see Elder Wirthlin's strength as he perservered to the end of his talk. Then, as he spoke of charity, what a kind act of Elder Nelson to stand there with him! I'm not sure I ever cried so much during a talk! That is one to remember.

I never know if different talks stand out to people, or if they're common favorites. I have to say, I had the same favorites! I missed a lot of Saturday's unfortunately, so I have some catching up to do. Elder Oaks' talk was one of my faves, it gave me a lot of perspective about how much time I spend doing things that are technically "good" but not as good as reading my scriptures! I too enjoyed Elder Eyring's talk, and I liked Stephen E. Snow's talk on service. I liked the quote from Pres. Kimball about how Heavenly Father blesses us through other people when we do service, that we would otherwise miss out on. Kage, I too got nervous about Sister Beck's talk because I work part-time and sometimes I feel like those talks only consider women to be "good moms" if they are 100% home all the time. But what I personally took from her talk was a description of the kind of mother we should be when we ARE home, and when we are with our kids, regardless of if we sometimes work outside the home. Overall, I found it to be uplifting.

The uplifting comment was about that talk specifically. I of course found the whole conference uplifting as well! :)

We talked about this at FHE tonight, and we too liked E. Oaks' and S. Beck's talks best. I especially enjoyed S. Beck's, because, 3 1/2 years into being a stay-at-home mom, I still deeply miss working full-time. I flip between wishing I was working and feeling guilty that I wish that. It was like salve to my soul to hear her speak so powerfully that what I'm doing really is important. She spoke similar words at the RS b'cast last week, and that was great as well. It's just so easy to forget that motherhood is so important when so much of the day is filled with mundane things. The teaching, fun, and laughter that's interspersed throughout sometimes gets glossed over in retrospect.

I loved Elder Cook saying "Live by faith not by fear"

I live by fear sometimes!

I loved President's Eyring's suggestion to record how we see God's hand in our life. What a great idea!

"Good, better, best" from Elder Oaks. So interesting to think about how being on the Internet, TV, activities, etc. are good but not always best. Thank you for an excuse not to over-involve my children!!!

I second the talk in the RS Broadcast from Sister Beck. Very motivating.

I thought it was neat to get to sustain a new member in the first presidency. As sad as it is to have President Faust gone, I always feel a little wave of excitement when there is change.

Oak's talk was awesome. A good reminder to fill my time with the best things, not just the good things.

Now I can't remember who gave it but I enjoyed the talk on personal revelation. Heaven knows that I need it now more than ever, and I think as my son grows I will need it more, too!

I missed Saturday afternoon, so I need to catch up. I look forward to them getting posted online.
