Nicknames

So my husband and I are trying to figure out how to go about establishing a nickname for Margaret. We love the name Margaret and will always call her that, but it's fairly inevitable that people are going to try to give her the nickname "Maggie." I personally don't like Maggie... perhaps due to the fact that that is my dog's name :) But we'd like to call her Greta if possible.

How do you go about establishing a nickname? Sounds strange, but can I confuse her by calling her two names? (I know I'd be confused if someone called me Margaret and then Greta if I were her age :)

If you do both often, she won't get confused. She'll know both of them are her.

My kids have so many nick names that we have given them, and they answer to every single one. They never seemed to be confused by it, but think it is fun, and are able to understand even though I am mommy I have other names too.

A lot of people use "Meg" as a nickname for Margaret... for some reason-- but Great is darling!!! Just go with it! So cute!

I have a friend who calls her daughter about 8 different names. I think that deciding on a nickname makes it kind of manufactured...don't force it, it will come naturally. A friend of mine had a son name Dylan Rafferty and over time everyone just started calling him Raff, and it stuck.

Miggy is cute.

I have a bunch of nicknames for my little one and she's responded to all of them from an early age. She now has one for herself-she can't say her own name clearly yet but she has a distinct answer when you ask, "what's your name?"

Greta is a such a cute nickname, how could she NOT respond? ;)

BTW, liz&meg, I have to know: what nickname does your little one manage to call herself?

Do you really believe my given name is Skipper? My parents called me Stephanie and Skipper from the time I was 9 months old. It never confused me because they used them both often. In formal settings (like church and school) I went by my given name, until junior high when I decided I preferred Skipper.

Greta is too cute not to use!

I guess she'll get used to being called both. I would think it would be confusing but I grew up being called my full name, so I wouldn't really know.

I'm pregnant with our second son and we've decided to name him Harrison. I do not like the name Harry (even if that is the name of a character from a fun book) and I don't like the name Sonny. Those are the only two nick names I could think of for Harrison. If a nick name comes about for him, cool. I plan on calling him Harrison.
