Deceptively Delicious!

I watched the first half of Oprah today and had to share. They had Jerry Seinfeld's wife, Jessica, on who has mastered the art of hiding vegetables in food so her kids get the nutrition they need without the battles! They posted some of her recipes and I'm excited to try a few. Seriously, chocolate brownies with spinach and carrots in them! And they're low fat too! My toddler's starting to get picky and I am working to reshape my own habits so I'm a better example for her. A lady in my ward is an expert at this, especially with hiding whole grains in her food and I've wanted to try some of her recipes as well. Maybe now I will!

I saw this show today. Actually...I was busy while it was on so I Tivo'd it. My husband and I just finished watching it. I can't even begin to say how many great things were talked about on todays show! Sometimes I just love the Oprah Show.

Dr. Oz was on the second half of the show talking about kids and eating healthy. Here is a link to what Dr. Oz had to say about kids eating healthily. -- sorry, I'm not sure how to upload the link ... you'll just have to copy and paste. -- http://www2.oprah.com/health/oz/oz_20071008_350_101.jhtml?promocode=HP14

The 5 main points Dr. Oz made were:

Step 1—Keep Nothing Off-Limits (don't bring junk food into the house in the first place.)

Step 2—Fiber for Breakfast

Step 3—Try Healthy Foods 10 Times (it takes that many tries before someone says "hmmm...I kind of like that)

Step 4—No Eating in Front of the TV

Step 5—Get Moving

I am really looking forward to looking through Jessica Seinfeld's book. I'm excited to hide veggies and see if my husband can tell if their in there! Not only will this help myself, my husband and our son but I know it will help the little boy I'm pregnant with right now. I know I should be eating healthier to protect him and to help his little body develop correctly.

This is great advice! I'm such a sugar junkie, and I've fallen into the habit of baking things with my girls (especially around 4pm, the witching hour) to get through the tough days. They both love to help me cook, but I don't want them by the stove. I would love to try some of this stuff! And I love Dr. Oz's Step 1.

I loved this show today! Loved it loved it. The only part I was confused about was when she said she still displayed the broccoli or whatever. What? For decoration? I love the idea but feel like I would want to mix it with serving vegetables in their real form but not necessarily just plain and raw. I love some of the Steamfresh veggies (and so does my baby) and I love veggies stir-fried and with pasta.

Don't mean to be critical because I thought she rocked and I loved Dr. Oz's segment too.

It's funny, my hubby has always talked about doing the dishes as a calorie-burner after dinner and Dr. Oz mentioned that it was today!

Great show!!

Linz, I understood Jessica Seinfeld as saying she puts the veggie along side the meal so the kids can eat it in their real form (like you said) and seeing it and getting used to the "real" vegetable rather than just assuming it will always be hidden in something.

She also mentioned that she has the veggies hidden in the food as well as in their true form so that they're exposed but without pressure. They get to try them but without the demands to "eat all your veggies"

I loved it! I loved the ideas presented by Jessica Seinfield. I am one of those moms that battle my kids every night when it come to vegetable. I will be buying the cook this week, my husband really pushed that I should get it for myself. I like that they talked about serving vegetables too, so that your children try them and evidently will eat them. You can never get too many vegetables, but if I could succeed just a bit by hiding them in their food, I would feel like I am somewhat a success.

On the Fox News Channel a few months ago I saw another lady named Missy Chase Lapine, and she had the same idea. She has a cookbook called The Sneaky Chef, which I bought afterward because I was so impressed by the idea. I am glad that the next generation of American children will (hopefully) be so healthy!
