Hospital Bag Must-Haves

We have a few expecting Sugar & Spice moms. So ladies, what are your hospital bag must-haves? There were a few things I was so glad I brought and a few things I wished I had brought. How about you?

Hm....I might be the wrong person to ask. I was sent to labor and delivery during one of my regular appointments and was completely unprepared. Judd had to run home and gather my "bag" for me. Some things I was glad I had: toothbrush and toothpaste, make-up (to make myself feel a little better since I was the Queen of Puffiness), and a comfy nightgown. Things I wish I had: slippers/socks and my very own ibuprofen (so they couldn't charge me $.45 every time they "dispensed" it to me)

Well, if you plan on nursing, definitely a nursing bra and pads! The best nursing pads ever are the Lansinoh ones. I went through a few different brands before I found them. I wanted to shout from the rooftops how great they were!

I personally didn't care about having my own pj's. I didn't want to stain any of my stuff! But I would definitely recommend slippers or flip-flops for getting up to the bathroom and stuff. A couple of simple things I couldn't live without...chapstick and hairties! And even though I gave him a hard time about it, since us laboring gals aren't allowed to eat, it's a great idea to bring snacks for your hubby. That way they don't have to keep leaving you to go to the cafeteria!!!

You make a good point Stephanie. I didn't wear my own nightgown during the delivery or anything. Yuck!! It was perfect, however, when I made the trip over to the NICU to visit Baby "I" while he was there. I had a cute lil' matching robe that went with it and felt like the most happenin' post-pregnant girl in the hospital. :)

By the way, if you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know who of our contributors are "with-child." Congratulations! That's so, so exciting. Please update us on the arrival of your little ones!

I agree! I could only think of Cramster as being pregnant but I may be totally clueless here!

I used hardly any of the things in my bag. I mean really, who reads a book during labor???? But chapstick and my own brush were essential! And a camera!!!!!! We had a friend who forgot theirs and we almost forgot the battery to ours!

Ashley is due in like 10 days or something (I'm not sure if she's been on lately or not, but I'll let her know about this post). Anyone else?

Three things I was so glad to have:

1)CDs
2)cameras
3)Tucks pads (nice after a vaginal birth)

Three things I wish I had brought:

1)baby nail clippers (she was already clawing at her face on Day one)
2)Nursing bra
3) FOOD (but for ME to sneak in, but good idea Steph as far as the hubby)

Stacibee, I have the cutest picture in my mind of you in your matching nightgown and robe in the hospital.

This was not essential, but fun: When my sister-in-law had their second child, my brother emailed our family pictures of their baby. That way everyone who couldn't be there felt included. So if your hospital has wireless like ours did, you could take a laptop.

I agree with the own pjs thing. And you don't have to have a night gown. I used a jammie shirt and bottoms and I was so comfy because i didn't worry about flashing anyone. Don't bring anything to fancy at the risk that something might get on it. Bring your own shampoo and Conditioner. My second was born in the winter and my bag had been in the car for a while so my S & C froze. Well the Hosp. only had baby shampoo and it was not great for my hair. I agree with the Nursing bra. I have done it with and without and I must say that having the bra was much more comfy. I second Lansinoh being the best bad. I have used many and it is my favorite.

Lastly don't forget to pack a going home outfit for yourself that you know will fit. I decided that I didn't want to go home in maternity cloths with my 3rd, so I packed a jogging suit that I knew would fit my still pregnant looking body :)

I wished I had packed a razor. I just remember feeling like a hairy beast by the time I finally left that place.

These are great tips, guys. I was due a few days ago (hello, doesn't he know he is supposed to be here already????) and every day my husband asks me if I have "the bag" ready for the hospital. Like I know much more than he does.

I thought the hospital provided nursing pads and stuff like that, but it sounds like I should bring some of my own. I also thought that the nurses check you all the time after you deliver, like every 4 hours or something. So are any kind of lounge pants a good idea??

Another question: what kind of small things did the hospital charge you for that you wish you would have brought your own instead? Stacibee mentioned ibuprofen...

Every time I've been in the hospital I've kept my underwear on for a while thinking i'll be more "comfortable" but after a while, you just don't care and childbirth is one of those times-I don't think lounge pants are necessary. I got nursing pads from the hospital but my insurance covered the entire thing so I had the opposite view from stacibee, get while the getting's good! We stocked up on whatever they'd let us! We raided her crib for diapers and wipes and took home everything!

Everyone already wrote great things, and the only thing I can think of to add is baby nail clippers. The nurses at my hospital weren't allowed to clip babies' nails so they didn't have any clippers to borrow.

Also, I remember being worried about bringing diapers, wipes, blankets, etc. for the baby, but the hospital takes care of all of that. All you need is to bring an outfit and blanket for the baby to go home in.

Oh, and to go along with the nursing stuff, bring Lansinoh cream too. Nursing hurts at first! And I love Lansinoh pads too, especially the extra-soft kind.

Cramster...best wishes!! And to answer your question, the hospital charged me for extra oversized pads.

I wasn't charged for anything. As with the pj pants. I think that there has been some confusion. Of course you will not be wearing them during the actual childbirth. Yes the nurses check you periodically but, the pants that I wore never got in the way.
