Water Birth

I've been following the blog of a friend of a sister-in-law of a friend ever since I saw that she had decided to go the water birth route. I was totally intrigued by the pool in the corner of her room that she was going to give birth to her baby in. At first it seemed so odd to me, but as I become more educated, I wonder what it would be like. After reading the description of how short the labor was and how minor her "battle wounds" are, I must admit that I am completely captivated. What do you think? Would you do it?

I read most of this post and it sounds very interesting. I think I'd be considered very traditional when it comes to labor, but I like learning about other practises. One of the questions that came to my mind was, where do the fluids and blood go? Right in the tub with her? Was her husband in the tub floating around with the bodily fluids too? I know it sounds gross but that was the first thought that came to mind!

No, I don't think that this is something that I would do. I am with Lindsay's thinking. Where do all those many many many fluids go? It is just not for me. Now, I wouldn't mind floating in the tub during early labor, but when I actually deliever, I will take the bed.

I am too much of a worrier to try anything like this. Before Caden was born, I looked into all kinds of techniques and when I was in labor with Caden I tried pushing on my side for a while to reduce the pain. While I don't think laying flat on your back during pregnancy isn't too smart because of gravity, I think water birthing seems to unconventional for me. The risks turn me totall off of it. These include respiratory problems (including the possibility of fresh water drowning), cord rupture with haemorrhage, and waterborne infections. I need Mark my hubby right next to me too, and I think he would be way grossed out for this.

Ever since I became a NICU nurse, I am a lot less open to these alternative practices. It's only about 1 in 10 term deliveries that the baby is born unexpectedly sick. Therefore odds are in favor that you can try one of these techniques and be just fine and have a wonderful experience. However, if I happen to be 1 in 10....I don't want to take any chances. I want to give my baby the healthiest and safest start possible!

Being the friend whose sister-in-laws friend this is, I have followed Lacy's plans and delivery on her blog. I gotta give her an A for courage, but this is totally not for me. I love the piece of mind knowing that a doctor is right there should anything go awry and, let's face it, I nEEd the epidural!
