Could it happen?

2008 looks like it's going to be a very controversial year. Now that most of the presidential candidates have come out of the wood work, I'm very interested to see what's going to happen on election day. I mean, think about it...the 2008 presidential election carries the most diverse group of contenders that have ever run against each other in the history of the United States (or at least in my lifetime). We've got the first female candidate, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, a very popular African American candidate, Barack Obama, a Latter-Day Saint candidate, Mitt Romney, a POW, John McCain and the infamous leader during 9/11, Rudy Giuliani.
So...I know politics are a very devisive topic, but I'm interested to know...what do you think? Do you know who you're going to vote for? Could a female be the president? Will an African American? What would the effect be like for the church if an LDS president was voted into office? What does the United States of America have in store during the next 4 years?

I have no problem with a woman being president.

I do have a problem with Hillary being president.

It would be so cool to have an LDS president, but I wouldn't vote for him/her just because of that. I would want to make sure his political beliefs match as close to mine as possible.

I really doubt Mitt will make it. I think being a Mormon is a strike against him in a great many people's perspective. I also know of a bunch of people who have not been happy with the way things have gone in Mass. since he became governor. I personally don't know enough about it to have my own opinion.

It will, however, do more good for people's perceptions of Mormons, I have no doubt. More exposure to let people know we aren't fanatic weirdos can only be good.

I agree with Joni, I wouldn't mind a woman being president. There have been many countries that have been ruled by women. However, I to would NOT want Hillary to be that woman.

I do not know enough about the other candidates to know who exactly that I would vote for. I do not tend to vote democrate though.

Great post Stac! I like each of the candidates you mentioned for one reason or another. I remember really liking McCain in the primaries back in like '99. I will likely vote Republican but I think all major candidates right now are likable in different ways.

I was watching a blurb on MSNBC about Romney the other day. The discussion actually said that there would be a large following of religious people behind him. They said the time has come when those that are for God will vote for others that are for God, despite their different beliefs. They also said he has a good chance of winning some democrat votes because he was well-liked in the "bluest" state in the nation. So, although I don't think he can win this election, I think he will have a good chance in 2012.

I don't know enough about what they believe to really cast my vote yet...but i feel the winds of change coming. It seems to me a lot of people are upset with how things are going so I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't a Republican this next time.

To stir the pot up a bit...why not Hillary? I'm just curious. Several people said, yes to a woman, just not Hillary. Is it because she's a Democrat? Connected to Bill? what she believes in? All of the above? :) Just curious...

Okay, I just have to stand up and say that unless something very drastic happens between now and election day, I will DEFINITELY be voting for Barack Obama. For those of you who don't know me, I'm really not a fan of politics (although I will admit to loving The West Wing TV series). I vote Independent, which to me means that I vote strictly on the individuals, not their party.

I've been paying close attention to Obama since his speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, and he is the first candidate that I have ever felt is actually close to being well balanced politically and honest. Although this sounds cheesy, when I hear him speak or read his comments on things, I can't help but think of him as a calm, sweet Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am really excited to read his new book, The Audacity of Hope. I think that will give me a much better idea of what type of president he will be, goal-wise. The only thing he's said that I have not liked is that everyone should have insurance (socialized healthcare). I know it sounds like a great idea, but many people work specifically to get healthcare. Also, countries like France and Canada are having a very hard time paying for it. I think the US has plenty of debt already.

That said, I really urge you to take a closer look at Barack Obama and consider voting for him. Check out his website: http://www.BarackObama.com

Let the crazy voting season begin!
