Gifts

I really enjoy giving unique gifts, but I feel like my creativity has run out. I need some ideas, specifically for baby showers. I have made blankets and burp cloths, and everyone really enjoys those shoe socks that Linz told us about. But I don't want to give everyone the same gifts, I like them to know that I put thought into their gifts. I have a few showers coming up soon, and if anyone has any creative/unique/fun ideas for gifts that I can make or buy, please share!!

If you can sew, what I really like are the bath towels that I have seen made. You take a nice thick adult towel and you sew part of another towel on the top to make a little hood. I know I am not explaining it very well. But they really are very nice. I like them because the baby doesn't out grow them like the wimpy baby towels that you can get at the store. To add a little something special to the towel, you could always sew some kind of cute pattern onto the towel.

Some thoughtful ideas I've seen include monogrammed picture frames (if you already know the name, post-labor you can even do one with the birthdate), Who loves baby? book (I've seen them at babies r us) where they can insert photos of family members. If it's a niece or nephew, you could probably make your own using photos and just laminate with a ring. Someone gave us stationary that included the addition of little v's name which was so nice. Come to think of it address labels with all three (or more) names would be cute too. Check out my blog today, really cute blankets, bibs, and burp cloths from spongyfeet.com (but it sounds like you already make your own which is awesome!)! Maybe a gift certificate for mom and and dad to go out to dinner or movies with free babysitting?! Tap into Mom and/or Dad's interests (let's face it, the baby could care less what they have or what they wear, it's all about the parents!). For instance some teachers I worked with last year gave me a Michigan State "My first blanket" which was super nice. Baby scrapbooking pages and stickers if they do that sort of thing. I really liked receiving the little toys that can hang from the car seat. A Bundle Me sack for the car seat in the winter is cool too. Something I recently did...go to amazon.com and type in the child's name under children's books. See if any children's books pop up that just happen to have their name in the title.

I don't know if you've ever seen "Taggies" before. They take advantage of the fact that babies love to play with the tags on things, i.e. stuffed animals and blankets. It's very easy to home-make these. Just find some some soft fabric and sew them so that about 2 inches of different ribbons that are different colors, widths and textures are poking out around the edges of two of the pieces of fabric sewn together. It ends up looking like a square with tags coming out all over it. Maybe difficult to explain with words, but my kids got the actual "Taggies" which are ridiculously expensive. They really like them. Sorry if that is totally confusing.

Great ideas Guys! I benefitted from this question! Katie, I have an example of both the hooded towel and a homeade "taggie" if either of those are something you are interested in making.

I also wanted to say that some of my favorite gifts were items that other moms considered to be "must-haves." No matter how much stuff you register for, until you have kids yourself...you don't necessarily know everything you want/need. So think about some of the stuff you couldn't live without for Baby R! For Katie R's shower, I put together a bag of My Favorite Things (like Oprah does.) It had fun items, my favorite brand of nursing pads, etc. And something that Katie did for ME at my shower that I thought was neat, was she put together a Mommy Care package, with my favorite kind of candy, a magazine, bath stuff, etc. So that's a great idea for a shower too!

Thanks for the great ideas ladies. It's much easier to ask for your ideas than to spend hours searching online for ideas. I appreciate your help!
