solid foods

How did you go about solid foods?

I have only fed little V rice cereal up to this point, and I've actually done it twice a day this past week. This weekend I want to add a vegetable in. I was going to do one rice cereal meal and one vegetable meal. A pediatrician told me to do one single ingredient food for a whole week. That way the child gets used to the taste and you can monitor their body's reaction to it. The other day I went and bought peas to start this weekend. My thinking was that if I started with something sweet that she wouldn't like something like peas later, but is there any validity to that thought? How do I do this??

Well here is what I have been told and found to be true: It doesn't matter if you give fruits or veggies first. Reagan has had applesauce everyday since she was two weeks old (because she has CF), but loves her veggies. I varied and went back and forth between giving her fruits and veggies, and she eats them all. In fact, she likes many of the veggies more than the fruits. Most of the veggies are fairly sweet anyways (but to me they all taste pretty gross). As far as trying something for a week, my doctor said they really only need 2-3 days, because if they were to have a reaction it would show up pretty early. For Reagan I gave her something new after 2 days (because the baby foods are only good in the fridge for 2 days). So far so good. Does Vi actually like the rice cereal? Reagan hated it, and the barley cereal too. I haven't tried oatmeal though. I just mix a little cereal in with her fruits and veggies so she gets her fiber. I don't know how much info you wanted. But I started Reagan with one meal a day of fruits and veggies for about a week, then increased her to two meals of it, and now we are up to three meals a day. Also, my doctor said to only buy a few of the "1st step" or "stage 1" foods. They are much more watered down, so after she tried them all I moved to "stage 2" because they are slightly thicker, therefore, higher in calories. Hope that helps! Make sure you tape it, it may be funny!

I'm with Katie on this one. Baby "I" doesn't really have a preference between fruits and vegetables. I mix cereal with fruit every morning for breakfast using both rice cereal and oatmeal cereal. We bought a box of mixed grains too. We're at the point now where we're implementing more table foods, which is an adventure. I'm SO paranoid that he's gonna choke on something that I sit and watch him take every bite. It's fun though. These little ones grow so stinkin' fast!!

Well we actually started other solids a little sooner than they recommend because Skyler hates plain cereal. So what we do is add a couple small spoonfuls of bananas to her cereal, so that she'll eat it. (We just started this week, so bananas is all we've tried so far.) As she gets older, I'll start giving her the full serving of fruits/vegetables, instead of mixing a little bit with her cereal. Yes, yes, they also say not to do what we do, because then they'll only eat things that taste sweet. Whatever! These little ones know what they do and don't like, so I'll do whatever it takes to give her her proper nutrition. It's one of those things where you read everything, take the Dr's advice, friend's advice, and then do what works for you! Everyone does it slightly different, and I've never heard of babies having serious problems because they started fruits a week earlier than recommended!

I fed my babies so many bananas because they mashed easily and were so much cheaper than babyfood.

I don't think it matters what you start with. Babies that young will pretty much take whatever you put in their mouth as long as they don't absolutely hate it. And if they do, keep trying. New flavors take a while to handle.

Mine didn't like baby food at all! She would eat cereal but wasn't interested in anything that came in a jar! she jumped right into table food so I had to grind meat, mash baked sweet potatoes, mashed bananas, etc. all homemade. Now she'll eat anything, but at first she was very picky.

She did have a few food sensitivities though, so waiting a few days is good to try something else. Also, trying a couple of times, can be up to twelve times with them still making awful faces just because it's unfamiliar. It doesn't mean they don't like it! I think every MD has a different theory but in feeding therapy, we don't start solids until they can sit up independently or with a little support because they have to have the trunk support to digest those big foods!

I pretty much agree with what everyone has said. I think that Katie is right, you don't need to wait a whole week. Two days should be just fine. I have always started my kids on veggies for the same reason that you have heard. Although, like everyone has said I don't know if it really matters. One of my kids actually didn't like the fruits to much because I think after the veggies it was almost too sweet. That of course changed with time. Like Liz, I didn't give Logan (my youngest) baby food for very long. He wanted what everyone else was having. Of course, I didnt even start giving him cereal until he was 6 months.

One thing that I liked to do was mix the oatmeal cereal with some kind of fruit. After I knew that they were adjusted to the fruit ok. To me, it just looked more appetizing.
